ONCE UPON A TIME:全球父母和孩子喜爱的经典英文童话(全彩色英文绘本)试读:

The Three Little Pigs

One day, three little pigs left home to go out into the world. The first little pig was walking when he met a farmer who was carrying a big bundle of straw. “May I have some of your straw so I can build a house?” the little pig asked. The farmer gave the little pig as much straw as he could carry. The little pig then made a house for himself out of straw.

A few days later, someone came knocking on the little pig’s door. He looked out the window and saw that it was a big, bad wolf!

“Little pig, let me in!” the wolf growled. “Not by the hair of my chinny-chin-chin!” the little pig replied.

“Then I’ll huff, and I’ll puff, and I’ll blow your house down!”the wolf said, and then he huffed, and he puffed, and he blew so hard that the little straw house was blown down! The wolf then grabbed the little pig and ate him.

The second little pig was walking along another road, and he met another farmer who was carrying a great big bundle of thick rushes. “Please, sir, may I have some rushes so I can build a house for myself?” the little pig asked. The farmer gave the little pig as many rushes as he could carry. The little pig found a good spot near the road, and build a nice little house made of the rushes the farmer had given him.

After a few days, the little pig was just sitting down to read the newspaper when he heard someone knocking at his door. He went to the window to have a look, and saw the big, bad wolf standing outside.

“Little pig, little pig, let me in!” the wolf demanded.

“Not by the hair of my chinny-chinchin!” the little pig answered. hard that the little house made of rushes was blown down. The wolf then caught the poor little pig, and ate him up!

The third little pig had taken a different road than his two brothers. After walking for a while, the little pig met a man who was pushing a great wheelbarrow piled high with bricks. “Kind sir,” the little pig asked, “may I please use some of your bricks to build a house for myself?”

“Why, of course you can,” the man answered. “Please tell me where you want to build your house and I’ll bring the bricks.”So little pig showed the man where he wanted to build his house, and the man left the bricks there for the pig to use.

The pig then built a nice little brick house with a rose garden in the front yard.

A few days later, the little pig was about to go outside to water his roses, when he heard someone knocking at his door.

“Little pig, little pig, let me in,” said a gruff voice. The little pig peeked through the window, and there stood the big, bad wolf!

“Not by the hair of my chinny-chin-chin!” the little pig shouted through the door.

“Then I’ll huff, and I’ll puff, and I’ll blow your house down!” the wolf said, and then he huffed, and he puffed, and he blew so was pushing a great wheelbarrow piled high with bricks.

“Then I’ll huff, and I’ll puff, and I’ll blow your house down!”the wolf said, and he huffed, and he puffed, and he blew as hard as he could, but not even one brick was moved out of place.

Now, this made the wolf quite angry, and more than a little surprised. He sat down for a few minutes to think, and then came up with an idea.

“Little pig,” the wolf said sweetly and not gruffly at all, “nearby is a field full of delicious turnips. Would you like to know how to get there?”

“Yes, I would!” replied the little pig to the wolf.

“Do you know where the carpenter lives?” the wolf asked the little pig. “The turnip field is on the other side of the carpenter’s house. How about if we go there together very early tomorrow morning?”

“Wow! That’s a great idea!” said the little pig. “What time will you come tomorrow morning to pick me up?”“Hmm, I’ll come for you early, around six o’clock,” said the wolf, “as long as it’s ok with you.”

The next morning at six o’clock, the wolf arrived at the little little pig had gotten up at five o’clock and gone to the turnip field alone. He picked an entire basket full of turnips, and then went back home.

This made the wolf very angry, but he didn’t say anything about it to the little pig. “One way or another, I’ll eat this pig,”the wolf thought to himself.

And so the wolf tried again. “Little pig,” the wolf said in a kind voice, “do you know what’s even better than turnips? Ripe, red apples, fresh off the tree! I know where there is an apple tree covered top to bottom with the juiciest apples you ever saw!”

All little pigs love apples, and this little pig was no different.“Oh,please tell me where this apple tree is!” the little pig said.

“Do you know the baker?” the wolf asked. The little pig shook his head. “Ok, then how about if I come tomorrow at five o’clock in the morning to pick you up? We can go to the baker’s garden and visit the apple tree together.”

The following morning the little pig was out of the door and on his way to the baker’s garden long before five o’clock had struck. The little pig had a problem, though—he hadn’t realized just how far away the baker’s garden was. To make matters worse, he had to climb the tree as well. As soon as the little pig reached the top of the tree, where all the juiciest apples were,he heard a voice below:

“Well, well, well, what do we have here?” the wolf called up to the little pig. “I hope you’re enjoying those apples. Why don’t you bring one down for me?”

“Sure!” replied the little pig. “I’ve got an apple for you. Here it comes!” The little pig grabbed an apple and threw it far away into the field.

Now you all have seen how dogs love to chase things. Well, a wolf is not much different from a dog, and when the little pig threw the apple, the wolf ran off chasing it even before he knew what he was doing.

As the wolf was running around the field looking for the apple, the little pig climbed down the apple tree and ran on home. Finally, the wolf held up the apple and turned to call out to the little pig, only to see that the tree was empty. The wolf growled angrily, and said to himself, “I’ll get that pig tomorrow for sure.”

The next day, the little pig went by himself to the fair. While he was at the fair, he bought a wooden barrel for apples. Then the little pig went home.

The path that led to the little pig’s home crossed many hills. As the little pig reached the top of the final hill, he saw the wolf running up the path! The little pig jumped inside the barrel to hide, but the barrel suddenly started rolling down the hill toward the wolf. The wolf ran away as fast as he could.

The wolf was furious. He decided that he was going to eat that pig tonight!

As the little pig was making dinner, he placed a large pot of water on the fire. The fire was so hot that the water soon started to boil. Just then the wolf came sliding down the chimney, and landed right in the pot of boiling water! The little pig put the lid on the pot, and that was the end of the bad wolf.

Little Red Riding Hood

Once there was a little girl who lived near the forest with her mother. This little girl was so nice and polite that everyone loved her, and she loved everyone back. This little girl especially loved her grandmother, who lived deep in the forest.

The little girl wore a red cloak everywhere she went. She loved this red cloak with its snug hood so much, because it was a gift to her from her dear grandmother. The little girl never took the cloak off, and so, everyone began calling her Little Red Riding Hood.

One morning, the sun was shining, and the birds were singing. It was a lovely day, and Little Red Riding Hood went outside to play. Her mother called her over and said, “I made a cake for your grandmother. Please bring it to her along with this jug of her favorite elderberry wine. She isn’t feeling very well these days, and a visit from you will make her feel better!”

“Of course, Mother!” Little Red Riding Hood answered. “I love visiting Grandmother!” And so, Little Red Riding Hood picked up the basket containing the cake and the jug of wine, and skipped off down the road towards the woods.

It took a long time to get to grandmother’s house, because it was very far away across the forest from Little Red Riding Hood’s home. After some time, Little Red Riding Hood met a wolf who was coming the other way. Little Red Riding Hood had never met a wolf before, so she didn’t feel scared at all.

“Good morning, little girl,” said the wolf very politely. As you know, wolves are very sneaky, and this one was definitely up to no good.

“Good morning, sir,” answered Little Red Riding Hood, who never forgot her manners.

“Today is a lovely day for a walk through the forest,” the wolf said. “Where are you walking, little girl?”“I’m going to visit my grandmother,”Little Red Riding Hood replied. “She lives deep in the forest.”

“Oh, I see,” said the wolf.

“That is a nice basket you have there. What’s inside?”

“This is a cake that my mother made, and this is a jug of grandmother’s favorite elderberry wine,” Little Red Riding Hood said.

“You said your grandmother lives deep in the forest, isn’t that right, child?” the wolf asked. Little Red Riding Hood nodded her head up and down. “And where does she live, exactly? I know the forest very well, but I don’t think I’ve ever met any grandmothers there.”

“Oh, Grandmother’s house is so easy to find!” Little Red Riding Hood said.“In fact, we are almost there. There is a clearing with three large oak trees in it, and Grandmother’s house is under the oak trees.”

As Little Red Riding Hood was speaking, the wolf was thinking to himself, “This little girl looks so fresh, plump, and delicious. I want to eat her up, but I should let her go to her grandmother’s house first, and then I can eat both of them!”

Little Red Riding Hood continued down the path, and the wolf followed. For a while, neither one of them said anything. Then the wolf spoke, “Little girl, in this part of the forest, there are many beautiful flowers. Do you see them? Don’t you think your grandmother would like it if you picked some flowers for her?”

Little Red Riding Hood realized that her grandmother would love to get some fresh flowers, so she ran off the path and started picking some. “I left home very early this morning, and I still have a lot of time to get to Grandmother’s house. I’ll just pick some of these flowers for her.”

As soon as Little Red Riding Hood stepped off the path, the wolf immediately left, and ran through the forest directly to the clearing and to grandmother’s house. There was the house under the three oak trees, just like the little girl had said. The wolf walked up to the door, and knocked softly.

“Who’s there?” called an old woman’s voice.

“Little Red Riding Hood,” the wolf answered. “I’ve brought you a basket with a cake and your favorite wine.”

“Oh, Little Red Riding Hood! I’m so glad you’ve come to visit me,” said the grandmother. “Come in, dear. Come in!”

The wolf quickly turned the handle, opened the door, ran to the grandmother’s bed, and ate up the old woman in one huge bite! Then the wolf heard Little Red Riding Hood singing outside as she walked towards the house. The wolf quickly put on the grandmother’s sleeping gown and cap, and then the wolf jumped into the bed and pulled the sheets all the way up to his face.

Little Red Riding Hood walked up to the front door of her grandmother’s house. She felt that something was wrong. The front door was wide open, and when the little girl looked inside, she saw her grandmother lying in the bed, completely covered by the bed sheets.

“Grandmother?” Little Red Riding Hood called. “Are you alright?”

“I’m fine, dear,” the wolf answered in a soft voice. “I’m too weak to get up.Please come closer, child.”

The little girl stepped closer to the bed, and noticed something strange. “What big ears you have, Grandmother,” she said. She didn’t remember Grandmother’s ears being so large and furry.

“All the better to hear you with, my dear,” the wolf replied, peeking at Little Red Riding Hood from under the sheets.

“Oh, what big eyes you have,” Little Red Riding Hood said.

“All the better to see you with,” the wolf said softly.

“And what a big mouth you have!” Little Red Riding Hood said. Suddenly, she realized that something was terribly wrong.

“All the better to eat you with!” The wolf reached out, grabbed the little girl, and gobbled her up!

Now, the wolf had eaten his fill, and was starting to feel sleepy. He knew he should leave this house, but the bed was comfortable, and he wanted to take a quick nap. Soon, the wolf was snoring loudly as he slept on the bed.

A huntsman of the forest was walking along the trail when he heard the loud snoring coming from the grandmother’s house. “I should check on that old woman, and make sure she’s alright,”the huntsman said to himself.

The huntsman walked into the house, and saw the wolf sleeping on the grandmother’s bed, and even wearing the grandmother’s clothes. “So! I’ve been chasing you all through this forest, and now I’ve finally caught you!” the huntsman cried out. He grabbed his gun, ready to shoot the wolf, but then he had a sudden thought: “I don’t see the old woman anywhere. What if she’s in the wolf’s stomach? I had better be careful!”

The huntsman put down the gun, and picked up the old woman’s sewing scissors instead. Very carefully, he cut open the wolf’s stomach. A moment later, out jumped Little Red Riding Hood! “Oh thank you, sir!” the little girl cried.“How terrible it was to have been eaten by that wolf! Oh, my grandmother!” the little girl helped her poor old grandmother out of the wolf’s stomach. “Don’t be scared, Grandmother. We’ve been saved by this kind huntsman!”

The huntsman took the wolf skin away to sell at the market. Little Red Riding Hood helped her grandmother get back into bed, and then she gave Grandmother the cake and the elderberry wine. After eating the cake and drinking the wine, Grandmother started to feel much better.

Little Red Riding Hood, meanwhile, was thinking to herself, “If only I had stayed on the path like I promised, none of this would have happened. I will always listen to Mother from now on!”

Alice in Wonderland

One day, Alice went to the park with her sister. Her sister loved to read books, but they were the kinds of books that don’t have pictures in them. Alice didn’t like those kinds of books. Alice tried to get her sister to play with her, but her sister didn’t want to play. She only wanted to sit on the bench and read her book.

Alice jumped off the bench, and decided to walk around the park by herself. Suddenly, a white rabbit jumped out from behind a bush. The rabbit looked at Alice, and then it said, “Oh, dear! I’m going to be late!” And then the rabbit ran away.

Alice was very surprised. She ran after the rabbit, but it was too fast for her. Alice saw the rabbit disappear into a hole in the ground. Alice climbed into the hole, and crawled after the rabbit. The hole became a long tunnel. After crawling for a while, Alice came to a well. The well was dark, and very deep.

Alice leaned over to look down, and suddenly she slipped, and was falling down the well!

Alice fell for a very long time. She wasn’t scared though, because she felt that she was floating down like a feather. She looked around her, and along the walls of the well she saw row after row of jams and sweets. After a while, she landed at the bottom in a soft pile of leaves. Alice saw a light, and walked towards it.

Soon she was in a room that was very bright, but there was nothing except a table with a key on it. Alice took the key, and found a small door in the wall. She looked through the little door, and on the other side she could see a beautiful garden.

“I really want to explore that garden,” Alice sighed, “but I can’t fit through the door!”

She turned around, and on the table now there was a strange bottle! Alice picked up the bottle, and saw a note that said “DRINK ME”.Alice was nervous because, as you know, boys and girls should never drink from strange bottles. Alice looked carefully at the bottle, but it didn’t seem dangerous. Alice opened the bottle, and drank all of the liquid inside. It was very tasty!

Suddenly, everything in the room became bigger! “No,” Alice realized, “I am becoming smaller!” Soon, Alice was small enough to fit through the little door. She ran through to the garden on the other side, and there she met the white rabbit again.

The rabbit was dressed in very fancy clothes. He was running back and forth, and he looked very nervous. “I can’t make the Queen wait,” he cried.

“She’s going to be so angry with me!” Alice looked at the rabbit, and wanted to ask him which way to go, when suddenly he ran off again.

Alice now felt tired, scared, and alone. She started to cry. All of a sudden, the rabbit came back and said, “What are you doing, sitting here crying? Don’t you know that we’re going to be late? Come on, then!” And so, Alice jumped up and ran together with the rabbit through the garden.

Alice and the rabbit came to a large, white house. Outside the house were some very strange men. They looked like playing cards, and they seemed to be painting the roses red. Alice was very curious, and she walked closer to take a look.

“What are you doing,Five of Clubs?” one man said angrily.“You have to paint the roses, but you’ve got paint all over yourself instead!”

“Mind your own business!” replied Five of Clubs. “I’m trying to paint the roses, but Nine of Spades keeps pushing me and making me spill my paint!”

The strange men went on arguing like this for a while. Alice stepped forward. “Excuse me, kind sirs,” she said politely, “but what are you doing, exactly?” Five of Clubs was just about to answer her when suddenly he cried out, “Oh, dear! The Queen!

The Queen is here,everyone!”

And then all of the men quickly knelt down on the ground.

Alice looked down the road, and saw a group of people marching towards the white house. There were children, then knights, and even jokers. The last to arrive were the King and Queen of Hearts.

The Queen of Hearts looked at Alice coldly, and said, “Who are you? What are you doing here at my home?” Alice bowed low before the Queen, and said, “Your Highness, my name is Alice.”

The Queen looked at Alice for a minute, and she then turned and pointed at the three gardeners who were painting the roses.“What about them?” the Queen said. “More strangers come to my home without invitations?”

“I don’t know who they are!” Alice said angrily. “This is your home. Why should I know what they are doing here?” Then Alice covered her mouth with her hand. She shouldn’t speak so rudely to a Queen!

The Queen was furious. “Grab this girl!” she ordered. “Off with her head!” Alice looked back at the cruel Queen, and felt very angry again. “Oh, yeah?” Alice replied. “Try it! Do you think you can catch me? You’re all just playing cards!”

Alice then was surprised again: everything was becoming smaller and smaller again. “No,wait, I’m becoming bigger!”

The card soldiers suddenly all jumped into the air and started flying around her. Alice cried out, and lifted her hands to brush them away.

And then Alice was lying on the bench in the park, waving her hands in front of her face. She looked down and saw that two or three leaves had fallen onto her dress. It had all been a dream!

Alice’s sister looked at Alice and said, “It’s about time you woke up! You slept for quite a while!”

Alice jumped up off the bench, and said, “I had an amazing dream! Let me tell you all about it!” And so she did.
