In this section, you will hear five short conversations. Each conversation will be read only once. At the end of each conversation, one question will be asked and you will have fifteen seconds to read the four choices marked A, B, C and D, decide which is the best answer. Then mark the corresponding letter on the answer sheet with a single line through the centre.

1. A. In the library.

B. In the shop.

C. In the restaurant.

D. In the hospital【答案】A【解析】录音中男士说:“I’m trying to get this book renewed.”译为:我想续借这本书。由此可推断说话场景是图书馆。【录音原文】

W: Are you being served, sir? What can I do for you?

M: No, I’m trying to get this book renewed. You know, it’s so helpful that I can’t finish my research paper without it.

M: I wouldn’t hesitate to say that I’m in favour of e-learning because I wouldn’t have to carry several heavy books to school.

W: I’m not quite sure why, but I feel more comfortable with paper textbooks. I don’t think I would enjoy reading things on laptops. If I have to choose, I will say that I’m against digital learning.

Question: What is the woman’s opinion towards e-learning?

3. A. He is going to interview her on media matters.

C. He will help her cope with an interview.

D. He wants to recommend a new product to her.【答案】C【解析】录音开头女士便指出“Carl,听说你将会帮我应对即将到来的面试”,关键是理解“nail this upcoming interview”的含义,此外根据Carl随后介绍的“我们公司可以帮你学会怎样表现出最佳的一面“put your best foot forward”、避免哪些陷阱以及怎样使自己显得友好且真诚”,也可推测C项正确。【录音原文】

W: Hello Carl. So ... I hear you can help me nail this upcoming interview.

M: Our company specializes in media matters. We can help you learn how to put your best foot forward, what pitfalls to avoid and how to sound friendly without sounding insincere.

W: Those would be good points ... okay, let’s hear what you got.

Question: Why does Carl meet the woman?

4. A. Spend a holiday in a zoo.

B. Look for information.

C. Visit a pet motel.

D. Go to his neighbour’s.【答案】B【解析】录音中两人在商量如何解决宠物的照看问题。女士说到“I’ll go online and look for reviews about the place.”由此可知女士是要寻找一些关于宠物旅馆的信息。因此B项为正确答案。【录音原文】

W: What should we do about the animals while we’re on vacation?

M: I was thinking of asking our neighbour, Ray, to take them in. But, we’ve got three cats and a dog. It’s really a lot to ask.

W: William. Why are you speaking so strangely? Like a child!

M: I’m pretending that I’m six years old.

W: Oh, I see. Hmm, that makes you seem smarter than usual.

M: Ha ha, very funny. Well, the reason I’m talking like a six-year-old is that last Sunday, 15 May, was International Day of the Family. So I thought it might be nice to look at some language which is used by children and with children.

Question: Why is William speaking like a child?

Section B

In this section, you will hear two long conversations. Each conversation will be read only once. At the end of each conversation, there will be a one-minute pause. During the pause, read the questions and mark your answers on the answer sheet with a single line through the centre.

Conversation One

Listen to the conversation, and mark each statement as either true (T) or false (F) according to what you hear.

6. There are no more than 5 essay titles that students can choose from for their first assignment.

7. The woman is going to write about the short-term future of third world economies.

8. The essays are required to be 3,000 words.

9. The deadline for the second essay is by the end of November.

10. They will meet up later to have lunch together.【答案与解析】

6. F  录音中提到“I think there are about 10 you can choose from”。由此可知,第一项作业有10个题目可供选择,而不是少于5个。故该说法错误。

7. T  录音中女士提到“It’s about the short-term future of third world economies”。由此可知她要写的题目是第三世界经济的短期预测。故该说法正确。

8. F  录音中提到“last year all the essays had to be 3,000 words in length? Well, that’s gone up by a thousand words”。由此可知,今年的论文字数比去年多了一千字,应该是4,000字。故该说法错误。

9. T  录音中女士提到“The first one has to be in by the 30th October and the second by the 30th November.”。由此可知,第一篇论文截止日期是10月底,第二篇是11月底。故该说法正确。

10. F  录音最后提到“We could go over some questions.”。由此可知,他们之后见面是要讨论论文问题,而不是一起吃午餐。故该说法错误。【录音原文】

M: I know it’s early but do you know anything about the first assignment that we have to do?

W: Yes, it’s already up on the economics faculty notice board. There’s a choice of essays up there. I think there are about 10 you can choose from. I can’t remember any of the titles though apart from the one that I think I’m going to write about.

M: What’s that one then?

W: It’s about the short-term future of third world economies.

M: Ooh. I don’t like the sound of that. It seems very wide-ranging.

W: It is. But remember that I spent some of the summer vacation travelling in Africa and Asia, so that has made me more interested in the subject, and I’ve also got some firsthand ideas on the subject.

M: Does the essay list mention how long the essays have to be and the deadlines?

W: Yes. You remember that last year all the essays had to be 3,000 words in length? Well, that’s gone up by a thousand words!

M: Oh no! They’ll take ages.

W: I know. I was hoping that they’d stay at 3,000 words or only go up to 3,500, but no luck I’m afraid.

M: What about the deadline?

W: The first one has to be in by the 30th October and the second by the 30th November. It looks like one essay a month like last year.

M: Well at least that hasn’t changed but as it’s the end of September now, that leaves only a month to get the first one done. I’m going to have got onto that straight away.

W: Yes, you’d better. If you want to talk about it, I’m going to be at the campus cafeteria at 1:30 for lunch. We could go over some questions.

M: OK. See you then. Bye.

W: Bye.

W: Personal branding is all the rage in the United States, where bestsellers like The Brand called You and The Personal Branding Phenomenon encourage people to promote themselves as brands to attract the perfect partner.

M: I took a few months off to think between jobs. Only when I had begun to do research, did I realize the power of the Internet.

W: So you made full use of it.

M: Sure! No sooner had I devised my campaign, Give Bob a Job, and had the film made, than the Bob branded merchandising fell into place! The video is in the format of an easy-to-download attachment! As long as I harness the power of the Internet, my influence will be unlimited.

W: How can the Internet help you in your job search exactly?

M: It’s what we call viral marketing. If you like it, you will send it to three others each, and so on and so forth. After a week, the numbers are frightening! And in case only, say, 100,000 people look at my video, there might be two or three to give me my dream job, and they are also the only ones I would want actually to work for!

W: That’s amazing! I have to admit to thinking it would be a great way to find a husband or a wife as well! It’s a shame I’m already married!

Two important years in the history of space travel were 1969 and 2001. On the 20th of July 1969, the American astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon. The words he spoke as he stepped from his spacecraft will always be remembered in history: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

In 2001, a 60-year-old American man called Dennis Tito also made history. He didn’t go to the moon, but he did become the world’s first space tourist. He paid $20 million to visit the International Space Station. During his vacation, he saw Earth from space and experienced being weightless. “My eight days there were the best days of my life,” he said.

There could be thousands of space tourists like Dennis Tito in the future. People are thinking of building space hotels where tourists can stay and enjoy the pleasure of being in space. Imagine looking down at Earth from a comfortable chair. Need some exercise? Handstands and somersaults are easy in zero gravity. And you can forget table manners in space—just throw a cookie across the room and watch it float slowly into someone’s mouth!

The space tourists of the future will certainly have fun. But space vacations won’t be cheap. One company thinks tickets will cost around $200,000. So if you want to follow Dennis Tito, you should start saving now. Or maybe you could try getting a job in a space hotel.
