Photography is really a form of spectating. Sports photography allows me to immerse myself as I "encounter the moment" , and it enables me to "express the moment" through the way I spectate.

Preface Athletes

What are presented to you are all manner of sports photographs recording the heroic efforts of athletes in major competitions from the Olympics to the Asian Games and the Chinese National Games. These photographs also record my own creativity and contemplation in my work as an athlete on the sidelines. When I came to the end of three years of field research as a postgraduate student in the School of Fine Arts at Nanjing Normal University, and was awarded a Master's degree in Photographic Arts, I exhibited my photographs. They encapsulated, by stages, my decade of experience in sports photography.

Being selected as an official press photographer at the 2008 Beijing Olympics was really a stroke of luck. On the evening of 8 August 2008, that first spectacular moment when I recorded events live at this global spectacle was an instant when my greatest long-held hopes and dreams became a thrilling reality. When the curtain went up on this Olympic Games, I was the same as the athletes who had come from around the world: I became an "athlete" on the sidelines, putting my heart and soul into my performance. Technology and understanding, passion and charm ran through every click of the camera shutter on and off the field.

Thinking back to the Olympics now, I recall carrying around 20 kg of camera and computer equipment, setting off shortly after 8 o'clock every morning and scurrying back and forth between the major venues in Beijing, not returning to my accommodation until around midnight. Over those 16 days, on average I made it to three venues a day. On one day I fitted in as many as six. Apart from the opening and closing ceremonies, altogether I photographed 24 events, including popular ones such as track and field, swimming, weightlifting, diving, gymnastics, football, basketball, volleyball and table tennis as well as at least two in which China won gold. Thinking about it now, it seems like a dream.

The Olympics is just such a gripping occasion. In order to photograph as many events as possible and get as many spectacular pictures as I could, I would often travel during mealtimes and spend my rest periods sorting out my photographs. To get a picture of Yao Ming, the basketball star, carrying the torch from Tiananmen Square across Jinshui Bridge, I thought nothing of hurrying over to Tiananmen Square at 4 o'clock in the morning and waiting straight through until 9 o'clock. To photograph a crunch match between China and the USA in the women's beach volleyball, I withstood a downpour to catch the whole thing from start to finish, and ended up drenched. To get a picture of an athlete from my province competing in the mountain-bike race, I lugged my heavy camera equipment and waited beside the track on the slopes of Mount Huangshan, wilting for over two hours in the scorching sun.

The Olympics brought home to me the thrill and charm of sports photography. Such as the time when most of the photographers thought China's first gold medal would come from the shooting field, but in fact it occurred in the weightlifting arena; or the time when the majority of photographers trained their lenses on the finish line of the men's 110m hurdles, only to find that the drama unexpectedly unfolded at the start... Sporting competition is brutal, and sports photography equally so; preparing painstakingly for it doesn't guarantee you any reward, but if you fail to prepare, it is guaranteed that you will not be rewarded. The test of sports photography is not just technology. Rather, it requires the photographer to contemplate and understand the wins and losses, ups and downs, joys and sorrows of life.

The extraordinary allure of sports photography lies in the fact that it conveys a sudden flash of inspiration. It shows a unique, arresting type of beauty. That is to say, the photographs you take are likely to show something completely different from what the other people who were present saw. When photographing sports, photographers need to observe not only the speed, trajectory and technique of the athletes, but also changes in the details and parts of the sporting process. In those fleeting instants, photographers are constantly challenging themselves in terms of both photographic techniques and aesthetic paradigms. The "athlete" on the sidelines is the same as those competing, with the same goal of "higher, faster, stronger". The very essence of sports photography is the enjoyment of being personally involved and experiencing the process of going after that goal again and again!Xiao YongTaiping Huayuan, Nanjing, spring 2012
