They lived with their Mother in a sand-bank, underneath the root of a very big fi r-tree.
从前，有四只小兔子，分别叫作弗洛普希、莫普希、棉花尾和彼得。
他们和妈妈一起住在一个沙堆里，沙堆就藏在一棵巨大的杉树下面。
“Now my dears,” said old Mrs. Rabbit one morning, “you may go into the fields or down the lane, but don’t go into Mr. McGregor’s garden: your Father had an accident there; he was put in a pie by Mrs. McGregor.”
一天早上，上了年纪的兔妈妈说道：“亲爱的孩子们，你们可以去地里玩，可以去小路上玩，但是，就是不能去麦格雷戈先生家的菜园子里玩。你们的爸爸就是在那个园子里出的事，他被麦格雷戈夫人做成了馅饼。”
“Now run along, and don’t get into mischief. I am going out.”“好了，去玩吧，别淘气。我要出门了。”
Then old Mrs. Rabbit took a basket and her umbrella, and went through the wood to the baker’s. She bought a loaf of brown bread and five currant buns.
说着，兔妈妈挎上菜篮子，带上雨伞，穿过森林，去了面包店。她在那里买了一块黑面包和五个带葡萄干的小圆面包。
Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cotton-tail, who were good little bunnies, went down the lane to gather blackberries; 弗洛普希、莫普希和棉花尾都很乖，他们沿着小路摘黑莓去了。
But Peter, who was very naughty, ran straight away to Mr. McGregor’s garden, and squeezed under the gate！
可是，彼得却非常淘气，他直接跑向了麦格雷戈先生的菜园子，从门下的缝隙里挤了进去！
First he ate some lettuces and some French beans; and then he ate some radishes; 他先是吃了一些莴苣和四季豆，然后，又吃了几根红萝卜。
And then, feeling rather sick, he went to look for some parsley.
吃着吃着，他突然觉得有点不舒服，就跑去找香芹。
But round the end of a cucumber frame, whom should he meet but Mr. McGregor！
可是，他刚刚绕过黄瓜架，就偏偏撞上了麦格雷戈先生！
Mr. McGregor was on his hands and knees planting out young cabbages, but he jumped up and ran after Peter, waving a rake and calling out, “Stop thief！”
麦格雷戈先生当时正跪在地里种卷心菜呢。他一下子跳了起来，一边挥舞着耙子追赶彼得，一边高声喊着：“抓贼啊！”
Peter was most dreadfully frightened; he rushed all over the garden, for he had forgotten the way back to the gate.
He lost one of his shoes among the cabbages, and the other shoe amongst the potatoes.
彼得当时怕得要命，他满园子乱跑，早已忘了进来的门在哪里。
他将一只鞋掉在了卷心菜地里，他的另一只鞋则掉在了马铃薯地里。
After losing them, he ran on four legs and went faster, so that I think he might have got away altogether if he had not unfortunately run into a gooseberry net, and got caught by the large buttons on his jacket. It was a blue jacket with brass buttons, quite new.
鞋子丢了，他就四脚着地奔跑，反而跑得更快了。我觉得，要不是他倒霉，一头扎进了醋栗网里面，他很可能就逃脱了。他衣服上大大的纽扣被网钩住了。那是一件蓝色的夹克，配着铜纽扣，还很新呢！
Peter gave himself up for lost, and shed big tears; but his sobs were overheard by some friendly sparrows, who fl ew to him in great excitement, and implored him to exert himself.
彼得觉得这下死定了，几颗大大的泪珠掉了下来。几只好心的麻雀听到他呜咽的声音，连忙飞了过来，给他鼓劲。
Mr. McGregor came up with a sieve, which he intended to pop upon the top of Peter; but Peter wriggled out just in time, leaving his jacket behind him.
就在这时，麦格雷戈先生拿着一个筛子跑了过来，他想用筛子一下子把彼得罩住。可是，彼得及时挣脱了，只留下了他的夹克。
And rushed into the tool-shed, and jumped into a can. It would have been a beautiful thing to hide in, if it had not had so much water in it.
彼得跑进麦格雷戈先生的工具房，跳进了一个喷水壶里。要不是壶里有那么多水，它还真是一个极好的藏身之处呢。
Mr. McGregor was quite sure that Peter was somewhere in the tool-shed, perhaps hidden underneath a flower-pot. He began to turn them over carefully, looking under each.
Presently Peter sneezed—“Kertyschoo！” Mr. McGregor was after him in no time.
麦格雷戈先生知道彼得肯定藏在工具房的某个地方，说不定就藏在花盆下面呢。于是，他小心翼翼地把花盆一个一个翻过来，仔细寻找。
就在这时，彼得打了一个喷嚏——阿嚏！说时迟，那时快，麦格雷戈先生朝彼得直奔过来。
And tried to put his foot upon Peter, who jumped out of a window, upsetting three plants. The window was too small for Mr. McGregor, and he was tired of running after Peter. He went back to his work.
他正准备一脚踩住彼得，彼得却一下子从窗户跳了出去，撞翻了三盆花。因为窗户很小，麦格雷戈先生根本没法钻过去。再说，他也不想再追了，于是，就又回去干活了。
Peter sat down to rest; he was out of breath and trembling with fright, and he had not the least idea which way to go. Also he was very damp with sitting in that can.
After a time he began to wander about, going lippity—lippity—not very fast, and looking all round.
彼得坐下来，想歇一会儿。他上气不接下气，吓得浑身发抖，根本不知道怎么才能走出菜园子。另外，因为刚才藏在喷水壶里，直到现在，他浑身上下还是湿漉漉的呢。
过了一会儿，他开始四处转悠。他轻手轻脚，不敢走得太快，眼睛还不时地向四处张望。
He found a door in a wall; but it was locked, and there was no room for a fat little rabbit to squeeze underneath.
终于，他在一面墙上发现了一扇门，但门是锁着的。而且，门下面的空隙太小，一只胖乎乎的小兔子根本钻不过去。
An old mouse was running in and out over the stone doorstep, carrying peas and beans to her family in the wood. Peter asked her the way to the gate, but she had such a large pea in her mouth that she could not answer. She only shook her head at him. Peter began to cry.
一只上了年纪的老鼠在门前的石阶上跑进跑出，她正在给住在森林里的家人搬运豌豆和大豆呢。彼得问她怎么才能找到菜园子的大门，可是，老鼠嘴里衔着一颗很大的豌豆，没法开口说话，只是对着彼得摇了摇头。彼得开始哭了起来。
Then he tried to fi nd his way straight across the garden, but he became more and more puzzled. Presently, he came to a pond where Mr. McGregor fi lled his water-cans.
接着，彼得打算干脆直接穿过菜园子。可是，他越走越糊涂。没过多久，他来到一个池塘边，麦格雷戈先生经常在这里给喷壶灌水。
A white cat was staring at some gold fish; she sat very, very still, but now and then the tip of her tail twitched as if it were alive. Peter thought it best to go away without speaking to her; he had heard about cats from his cousin, little Benjamin Bunny.
一只白色的猫坐在那儿，一动不动地盯着水里的金鱼，只有尾巴尖时不时地动一下，才让人知道这是只真猫。彼得觉得他最好还是直接走开，不问她了，因为他以前听表哥讲过一些和猫有关的故事。他的表哥就是小兔本杰明。
He went back towards the tool-shed, but suddenly, quite close to him, he heard the noise of a hoe—scr-r-ritch, scratch, scratch, scritch. Peter scuttered underneath the bushes.
彼得转过身，朝工具房走去。突然，附近传来了锄土的声音，“咔—咔—咔—嚓”“咔嚓”“咔嚓”“咔嚓”。彼得赶紧钻到了灌木丛中。
But presently, as nothing happened, he came out, and climbed upon a wheelbarrow and peeped over. The first thing he saw was Mr. McGregor hoeing onions. His back was turned towards Peter, and beyond him was the gate！
过了一会儿，什么也没发生，他这才走了出来，爬上了一个独轮手推车，偷偷地四下张望。他一眼就看到了麦格雷戈先生，他正在洋葱地里锄土呢。他当时正好背对着彼得，而离他不远的地方就是菜园子的大门！
Peter got down very quietly off the wheelbarrow; and started running as fast as he could go, along a straight walk behind some black-currant bushes.
Mr. McGregor caught sight of him at the corner, but Peter did not care. He slipped underneath the gate, and was safe at last in the wood outside the garden.
彼得悄悄地从手推车上溜下来，沿着黑加仑灌木丛后面一条笔直的小路，使劲地跑了起来。
跑到拐角的时候，他还是让麦格雷戈先生给发现了，不过，他已经不在乎了。他从菜园子大门的下边钻了出去，跑进了附近的树林里。这下他安全了。
Mr. McGregor hung up the little jacket and the shoes for a scare crow to frighten the blackbirds.
Peter never stopped running or looked behind him till he got home to the big fi r-tree.
麦格雷戈先生把彼得落在菜园子里的小夹克和鞋子挂起来做成稻草人，用来吓唬那些偷嘴的乌鸫。
彼得不敢回头看，他跑啊跑啊，一直跑到大杉树下，跑回了家。
He was so tired that he flopped down upon the nice soft sand on the floor of the rabbit-hole and shut his eyes. His mother was busy cooking; she wondered what he had done with his clothes. It was the second little jacket and pair of shoes that Peter had lost in a fortnight！
他跑得实在太累了，一进门就扑通一声倒在了兔子洞中松软的沙地上，闭上了眼睛。兔妈妈正忙着做饭，她很纳闷彼得的衣服哪儿去了。这才两个星期呢，他已经第二次把小夹克和鞋子都弄丢了！
I am sorry to say that Peter was not very well during the evening.
His mother put him to bed, and made some camomile tea; and she gave a dose of it to Peter！
“One table-spoonful to be taken at bed-time.”
说起来怪伤心的，彼得那天晚上身体很不舒服。
兔妈妈把他抱到床上，给他沏了些甘菊茶，当作药让他喝了一剂。“睡觉前还要再喝一匙啊。”
But Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cotton-tail had bread and milk and blackberries for supper.
而弗洛普希、莫普希和棉花尾却享用了一顿丰盛的晚餐，有面包、牛奶和黑莓。
