Source Text 1:On the Art of Living with Others

In the first place, if people are to live happily together, they must not fancy, because they are thrown together now, that all their lives have been exactly similar up to the present time, that they started exactly alike, and that they are to be for the future of the same mind. A thorough conviction of the difference of men is the great thing to be assured of in social knowledge: it is to life what Newton’s law is to astronomy. Sometimes men have a knowledge of it with regard to the world in general: they do not expect the outer world to agree with them in all points, but are vexed at not being able to drive their own tastes and opinions into those they live with. Diversities distress them. They will not see that there are many forms of virtue and wisdom.

Many of the rules for people living together in peace follow from the above. For instance, not to interfere unreasonably with others, not to ridicule their tastes, not to question and requestion their resolves, not to indulge in perpetual comment on their proceedings, and to delight in their having other pursuits than ours, are all based upon a thorough perception of the simple fact that they are not we.

If you would be loved as a companion, avoid unnecessary criticism upon those with whom you live. The number of people who have taken out judge’s patents for themselves is very large in any society. Now it would be hard for a man to live with another who was always criticising his actions, even if it were kindly and just criticism. It would be like living between the glasses of a microscope.【参考译文】论与人相处的艺术

A mighty long river sometimes flows through a broad section with plains lying boundless on either side, its waters rolling on non-stop for thousands upon thousands of miles. Sometimes it comes up against a narrow section flanked by high mountains and steep cliffs, winding through a course with many a perilous twist and turn. A nation, in the course of its development, fares likewise.

The historical course of man’s life is just like a journey. A traveler on a long journey passes through now a broad, level plain, now a rugged, hazardous road. While a determined traveler cheerfully continues his journey upon reaching a safe and smooth place, he finds it still more fascinating to come to a rugged place, the enormously magnificent spectacle of which, he feels, is better able to generate in him a wonderful sensation of adventure.

In a field of that distant, half-neglected farm, I found an avenue of great elms leading to nothing. But I could see where the wheat-bearing earth had been leveled into a terrace; and in one corner there were broken, overgrown, gateposts, almost hid among great straggling trees. This, then, was the place I had come to see. Here had stood the great house or palace, with its terraces, and gardens, and artificial waters; this field had once been the favourite resort of Eighteenth-century Fashion; the Duchess and Beauties had driven hither in their gilt coaches. And although the house had long since vanished, and the plough had gone over its pleasant places, yet for a moment I seemed to see this fine company under the green of that great avenue and hear the gossip of their voices as they passed on into the shadows.【参考译文】

Rapid transportation, modern architectural forms, methods of building up cities, and the architecture of cyberspaces all reflect the ability of our mind to cope with the spatial fractures that are produced by these things. If we are lucky enough to have the kind of mind that can make sense of a world filled with the heavy distortions of space and time that have been wrought by modern technology, then why fight it? After all, such technology has its advantages. We can’t go back to being wild savages loping across the plains of the savannah. Instead, we need to find the way ahead. But in finding this way, we need to first make sure we understand where we have come from, why so many of us value our natural heritage, and what we stand to gain from its preservation. Leaving aside the apocalyptic visions of seas boiling dry from global warming or untold millions of human beings dying slowly from the cumulative effects of toxins in our water, soil, and air, there is a much simpler rationale for our wanting to find ways to heal the spatial rifts that lie between us and the rest of the natural world: contact with nature is good for our minds.【参考译文】

Our institute employed an English teacher. He never laughed when he chatted with his Chinese students on amusing stories, nor did his face show any expression. However, when it came to topics of the dullest nature, he would burst into uncontrollable laughter, roaring while rocking in his chair, almost falling flat on his back. The students would then look at each other, wondering if he was in his right mind.

One day he set the students an essay to see how well they could write in English. That was simple. And his students, quick at writing, finished it at one go and turned it in no time. He picked one that he thought the best. When he read it out to the students, they were greatly perplexed. Of all the comments, why did he like this one best? Not a single word of it was true. It was about the campus cafeteria and the author was a peaceable and timid guy. In order not to offend the school authorities-a decisive factor: concerning his graduation-he had made up a high-sounding story in praise of the cafeteria regardless of reality. The teacher was as well aware of the cafeteria’s terrible conditions, but why should this piece in particular have appealed to him so much?“This is undoubtedly a good one,” the teacher insisted. “Unprecedentedly good!” He began to read. “The most beautiful spot on campus is not the classroom building, nor the sports ground, it is our cafeteria. Look! The windowpanes are so clean that you scarcely notice there is glass there-” Humorous? But what was humorous about it? The students were puzzled. “If you were not careful enough,” the teacher continued, “and had a fall on the floor, you would be amazed to find that you had not fallen at all because you did not get a single particle of dust on your clothes. By now the students seemed to be cottoning on. The teacher went on his reading punctuated by fits of laughter. “How wonderfully is the food cooked here! What a great variety of dishes you have here and how well your appetite is satisfied! In fact it is only at the cafeteria of the institute that you eating enjoyable...” Suddenly the students laughed, rocking the classroom with their laughter. Following this logic, God knows how many articles we would be able to produce, articles that are just as well-worded, quick-witted, artfully-conceived and set you rolling with laughter!

George Washington, wealthy planter and fox hunting sportsman, was without a trace of Puritanism. He was so completely indifferent to its pious irascibilities that he appears never to have made any comment on them. Indeed, he seemed, according to the evidence, to have had no instinct or feeling for religion, although he attended church twelve or fifteen times a year.

The name of Jesus Christ is not mentioned even once in the vast collection of Washington’s published letters. He refers to Providence in numerous letters, but he used the term in such a way as to indicate that he considered Providence as a synonym for Destiny or Fate. Bishop White, who knew him well for many years, wrote after Washington’s death that he had never heard him express an opinion on any religious subject. He added that although Washington was “serious and attentive” in church, he never saw him kneel in prayer.

Nevertheless, he believed in the stabilizing power of religion. He
