Do you like wearing jeans?Track 01Buy New Jeans

My friend Mary came to school wearing a brand-new pair of Zee jeans. “You new Zee jeans are so cute!” I said.

“My grandma took me clothes shopping last weekend,” Mary said. “The Zee jeans were on sale. They have cool pockets and are unbelievably comfortable. When you're at my house after school, try them on and see for yourself.”

“Hmm.” I didn't think so. But when I tried them on, I couldn't help agreeing. “I'm totally taking these!” I said. As soon as I got home, I told my mom that I had to get some Zee jeans.

Mom said, “You already have three pairs of perfectly good jeans. There is no way Dad and I are paying that much for a pair of pants. If you want to buy them with your own money, I would be happy to make a long list of extra chores you can do.”

“I'll start this minute,” I said.

It took me three weeks to save enough money. I changed kitty litter, watched my little brother and sister, and cleaned refrigerator. The refrigerator cleaning was the worst because one of the shelves fell while I was taking everything out. Food and milk splashed all over the floor. It took me one and a half hour to clean it up!

Anyway, I finally bought my Zee jeans, and I loved them even more than I thought I would. I loved them half because they had cool pockets and were super comfortable, and half because I had worked so hard to earn the money to buy them myself.

Passage 2Think About It

Have you ever helped anyone?Track 02We Are Lucky

My friend Jack and I were doing math puzzles at his kitchen table while his grandma, Emma, was baking cookies.

I said, “Those smell so good.”

“I can't wait to taste them!” said Jack.

Emma smiled. “We certainly are lucky. We have more than enough food to eat and share.”

“We really are lucky to have enough food. Some people don't have that.” Jack said.

“Maybe we can do something to help,” I said. “But it's a big problem.”

After some discussion, we decided to volunteer at a soup kitchen close by the next week. Jack and I had never done anything like this before, so we couldn't help feeling nervous.

On the day for our shift, Emma would serve soup, Jack was in charge of the fruit salad, and I was on mashed-potato duty.

A man set his plate in front of me. “Those potatoes look delicious,” he said.

“They do smell good.” I put a scoopful onto his plate and asked him, “What do you get when an elephant crosses a potato?”

“Um, I am not sure.”

“Mashed potatoes.”

“That's funny!” he grinned. “I am David. You sure brightened up my day, young lady. Thank you.” I realized then that even if my help was small, it meant a lot to David and the people at the soup kitchen that day.

On the way home, Jack, Emma and I shared stories about the great people we had met and the interesting things we had learned. We don't need a lot of money to make a difference. We can donate our time, and we would like to go back and help again sometime.

Passage 3Think About It

Mom answers, “Do you know you are not alone? In fact, I also got nervous before during a test when I was a student. But I conquer my nerves at last. Here are some ways to manage that stress and do your best on an exam. One way is to do your homework and study until you know the material well.

Have you made money by yourself?Track 05Making Money

If you live in the United States, you can't have a full-time job until you're 16 years old. At 14 or 15, you can work part-time after school or on weekends, and during summer you can work 40 hours each week. If you are younger than 14, you can also make some money of your own, with a parent's permission.

There might be money hidden in all the things you can do around the house. You may have a list of chore like cleaning your room or doing the dishes. You may have to do these chores “for free.” But you can do more than your regular chores to earn extra money. Here are some examples.

“I make money by cleaning up around the yard and cleaning up other people's yards.” says Justin, 11.

Some of you are using your creativity! Lena, 13, makes money by knitting dog sweaters and selling them to her neighbors. Jasmine, 12, even writes articles and book reviews for different magazines!

When you are offered extra chore, you have to know how much to charge for it. You can find out how much the professional charges, so you have an “upper limit.” You can also check with your friends or your parents.

Remember, earning is learning. By working to earn your own money, you'll be learning skills you'll need to succeed in the world.Vocabulary Skills【

Passage 6Think About It

Can honeybees smell?Track 06Training Honeybees

Honeybees can be trained to search for dangerous chemicals because bees have an excellent sense of smell.

Since bees have brains the size of a pinhead (针头), you might think that they would be slow learners. But this is not the case. Bees can be trained to find a new smell in just one or two days. They are given a chemical smell. Immediately after that, the bees are given a drop of sugar water. After this is repeated once or twice, the bees learn to link the new smell with a food reward.

The next step is to allow the bees to search for the bottles marked with the same chemical smell. Each time a bee finds a bottle, it is rewarded with sugar water. After several days, the bees are fully trained and will search for the smell even without a food reward.

Dogs also have an excellent sense of smell, but dogs have good days and bad days. Bees are always ready for work. It takes months to train just one dog, but it only takes a few days to train 10,000 bees or more. With many bees working together, bees can search large areas quickly. Bees can also get in places too high for a person to reach and too small for a dog to enter.
