She was on her way to pick up a pair of repaired shoes for her husband when she saw the body of Elizabeth "Betty" Short lying just off the sidewalk. Bersinger initially mistook the body for a mannequin, but upon closer inspection, realized it was the body of woman. She immediately contacted the police and touched off one of the most notorious unsolved cases in the history of the United States.

Immediately the gruesomeness of the crime caused a sensation. Betty Short's torso had been severed in two and there were slash marks from the corners of her mouth to each ear. She'd been drained of blood, cleaned and then posed with her arms bent at right angles. Her arms and legs showed signs of being tied up or hung upside down and she had injuries from blows to the head. The lack of blood led the police to determine she was killed elsewhere and dumped in the vacant lot. They also concluded that she'd been left sometime after 2:00 a.m. because there was no dew on her body.

Dubbed the Black Dahlia by the media, the facts of the case quickly got lost in speculation and sensationalization promoted by the media. Short was portrayed as a starlet who succomb to the darker side of Hollywood dressing provocatively and working as a prostitute. However, Steve Hodel, a retired LAPD detective who suspects his own father killed Short, reports in his book, The Black Dahlia Avenger that these depictions were inaccurate and false.

Interviews with people who knew Short described her as "immaculately dressed", "shy and sweet", and "always a well-behaved employee, who didn't smoke or drink," (Hodel p. 385). Her failings were that she was arrested for underage drinking in 1943, and she was known to stretch the truth such as when she told people she'd married Major Matthew Gordon in Florida and lost their unborn child. While she and Matt were engaged, they hadn't married or lost a baby. In fact the autopsy showed that she'd never been pregnant.

The initial investigation was hindered by the fact that the media and gawkers were on the scene before police and damaged the crime scene. The police had difficult time piecing together the events from the time Short was last seen on January 9th at the Biltmore Hotel and when her body was found on January 15.

However, a full-out effort was made to find the killer. The police canvassed the neighborhood, talked to the last person known to have seen Short, Robert Manley and interviewed all her old boyfriends. The clean cut of her wounds led the police to suspect the murderer was someone with surgical skill and went so far as to get a list of medical students from the nearby University of Southern California.

As many as 50 people confessed to the crime and many more indicated they'd seen Short during the time she'd last been seen alive and found on January 15. However the confessions and sightings were dismissed. Several men were interrogated, but no arrest was made.

Nine days after her body was discovered, the local newspaper, the Examiner received a call and documents in the mail presumably from the murderer. The package contained Short's birth certificate, social security card, photographs, Major Matthew Gordon's obituary and an address book with Mark Hanson's name embossed on it with the names of several men listed in side. All the men were contacted and cleared. The men reported having met Short and bought her a drink or dinner, but lost contact with her when she let them know she wasn't interested in a physical relationship.

A day after the package with Short's belongings arrived at the Examiner, her handbag and one of her shoes was found near a dumpster several miles from where her body was found. None of these items helped the police find her killer.

Over the last sixty-five years, old suspects have been revisited and new suspects have been postulated, but the official status of the crime remains unsolved.

The Los Angeles Police Department interviewed hundreds of people in connection with the case. Twenty-two men were investigated as possible suspects. The men that stood out then or continue to get attention today are Robert Manley, Mark Hanson, Dr. George Hodel and Patrick S. O'Reilley. Further, armchair sleuths have speculated that Short was killed by the same murderer in the Cleveland Torso murders. Janice Knowlton, after undergoing regression therapy, accused her father of killing Short. True crime writer John Gilmore suggested the killer was Jack Anderson Wilson, however Wilson died before police could question him. Los Angeles Times reporter Larry Harnisch suspects Walter Alonzo Bayley, a surgeon who lived in the neighborhood Short was found in and whose daughter was friends with Short's sister. More unusual accusations were levied by informants against Orson Wells and Woodie Guthrie.

Officially, the Los Angeles Police Department reports that the case is unsolved and unlikely to ever be solved because the murderer and everyone involved in the case is dead, and the evidence is either tainted or lost.

Robert "Red" Manley: The initial suspect in the Black Dahlia murder was Robert "Red"Manley who was the last person known to have seen her alive. According to his statement, he had offered a ride to Short who initially was resistant to get in the car with him. He took her visit a family in San Diego, but because the house was small, she was asked to leave. Short contacted Manley and asked him to take her to the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles where she was going to meet her sister.

He picked her up and they spent a platonic night in a hotel. He took her to the Biltmore where she asked him to look for her sister while she went to the restroom. She never reappeared and needing to get back to his family, he left at about 6:30 p.m. He was a strong suspect at first simply for being the last to see Short. But he passed a polygraph test and was let go. Years later while in a mental hospital, he was given sodium pentothal or truth serum which also cleared him.

Mark Hanson: Police investigated Mark Hanson, whose name was embossed on the book the murderer sent to the media. Hanson owned a nightclub and housed many of the woman who worked for him in his home. Short stayed with Hanson for a few months in 1946. Hanson made romantic overtures toward Short that were all turned down.

Short called Hanson as she prepared to return to Los Angeles with the help of Manley. Hanson admitted the address book was his, but that he'd never used it. Although he remained a suspect as late as the 1950's, he was never arrested. He died of natural causes in 1964.

Although he was acquitted of the crime, the police remained suspicious and tapped his phone. The fact that he was a doctor specializing in public and sexual health also increased the police's suspicions. Dr. Hodel made incriminating comments in phone calls such as, "Supposin'I did kill the
