美国华盛顿大学的心理学博士伊丽莎白·洛伏特斯通过实验得出一个大脑靠耳朵运转的结论。她说：人的记忆语言有两种途径，一种是图像记忆，储存视觉形象；另一种是回声记忆，储存听觉形象。眼睛一旦看到某些图像或接受某些视觉信息，就会把一个比较完整的形象储存在图像记忆中，但是它很快就会消失，也许就在一秒钟左右。耳朵一旦接受信息，也同样会把一个比较完整的形象储存起来，但是它消失起来慢得多，大约需要四到五秒钟。
发掘特洛伊城遗迹的德国人希伯来，是一位杰出的语言学习天才。他在很短的时间内学会了许多国家的语言，用的便是听读的方法。不管是背诵单词还是文章，他都一遍遍地大声朗读，一直念到深夜。结果，每一种语言，他都仅用了三到六个月的时间就学会了。

听写是英语教学过程中一种行之有效的教学手段，是一种融辨音识义、词汇量、语法结构、语言知识和快速书写于一体的综合语言能力，所以它在听说读写“四会”中具有举足轻重的意义和作用。听写又是一种时限性强、输入量大、需要高度集中人的注意力与充分调动所有语言知识的强脑力劳动的过程。听的过程是接受和理解的过程，听是写的前提，只有听得正确，才有可能写得无误。听写要求学习者耳到、心到、手到，多种器官同时高效地协调工作。在听写时哪怕瞬间的注意力分散都会大大影响听写的效果。学习者听写时既要高度注意听的内容，又要十分注意写的正确性。
美国著名教育和测试专家John Oller（1979）指出，听写过程是积极的、创造性的。它涉及语音、词汇、语法等多种成分，需要听者运用对篇章理解及分析等能力，综合听和写的能力，能综合地衡量听者的语言水平，从而提高听者的英语总体水平。
听写是一种重要的教学方法，它可以教授语言的诸多方面。John Oller教授对语言掌握程度的综合测定与听写的关系做了研究，他分析了100名洛杉矶加州大学留学生学习者的以英语作为第二语言的分班考试成绩，考试包括5部分：听写、45分钟的作文、同义词配对、分辨最小对子为基础的语音测验、辨证语法正误测验。John Oller发现在赴美前进行过听写训练的学习者的听写成绩和其他部分的成绩，均比未进行过这项训练的学习者的听写成绩和其他部分的成绩高得多。另外他和其他人在伊朗研究听写与以英语为外语的一组学习者的托福考试成绩的关联时，他们发现听写与听力理解、托福考试成绩相关情况最佳，结论为听写是听力理解和全面语言水平提高的好方法。
如何进行听写？
大家已经认识到了听写对于提高听力的重要意义，但是听写绝不是随意地听听写写，只有按照科学的方法进行听写，才能最大地发挥听写的作用。
材料选择：
1.筛选与学习者学习阶段相适应的英语篇章。
2.文章应该是结构完整和语义连贯的短文，有助于学习者的听悟技能和理解训练。
3.文章应该能引起学习者的兴趣，且有故事情节。
4.文章应该比较简短，听写一般以10～15分钟为宜。
5.文章应该结合学生所学内容，深浅相当、内容相似。
6.文章应该采取多种形式和题材。
听写步骤：
具体来说，听写的第一步是听整个篇章。我们需要把全文的主旨和梗概先听懂再进行听写，否则写的时候会感觉很盲目。听主旨需要1～3遍，只要弄懂了主干就不用再继续这一步了。有些同学可能3遍了还听不出主旨，这种情况是因为听力材料对你来说太难了，可以考虑更换更适合你的听力内容。
第二步是一句一句地听，一个词不差地写。一个句子可以听2～5遍不等，视你的理解程度而定。如果句子有一部分觉得比较难，可以反复听几次。如果句子很长，可以一个分句一个分句地听写。5遍还听不出的部分可以先放弃。
第三步是最重要的步骤，检查和总结。这时我们对照听力文本检查自己的听写。有任何错误一定不要放过。错误是我们最宝贵的财富，发现、总结和纠正这些错误可以让我们日后少出类似的问题。我们需要仔细思考自己错误的原因，是连读弱读？是美式发音？是词不认识？是词拼写错了？还是单词的发音不熟？随后，我们要把自己的错误归类记录。至少分成六类：
1.连读弱读
2.美式发音
3.纯生词
4.拼写错误
5.单词发音不熟
6.语法问题（包括单复数时态等）
这些错误总结出来后要经常回顾，避免再犯。
第四步是跟读模仿，就是跟着音频朗读。这时要尽量把所有发音、连读、重读、语调都读得和录音里一样。这可以帮助我们复习发现了的语音和词汇问题，并且大大地提高语感。我们要看着文本跟读，而且是看着自己写的改好的文本读。因为这样我们可以对自己犯过错误的地方加深印象。如果你对内容很不熟悉，可以放一句录音暂停一下，给自己时间跟读。这样练一两遍之后可以不再暂停，直接再跟读一两遍。而后我们可以把文本放到一边，舍去视觉帮助，纯粹用耳朵接受信息，再跟读一两遍。如果这样也能跟下来了，证明所听材料你已经基本掌握了。总体来说，跟读一共需要3～6遍。我们从小学说话是靠模仿，学连贯表达是要家长给讲故事，学诗词是要先背诗词，学字要临帖，学写文章要背范文，读书破万卷，下笔如有神。学英语也是如此，没有模仿，没有复述，就只像一般听力教材那样，听完了划勾，多项选择，是不可能真正练好英语听说的。只有听完了就复述，才能真正提高听力，也同时提高连贯表达的能力。编者2014年4月
