前言

在2008年“美国梦”还很热的时候,我与托福结下缘分。那一年iBT还很“变态” (业内戏称) ,考试官方还未开始偷懒在每场考试中“复制题目”或“重复出题” 。尤其记得第一次做托福阅读题目的时候,文章长度、内容题材、题目类型带给我的冲击——“太难了,毫无规律可循” !

其中最难的部分莫过于单词,现在许多孩子从小就能接触到的Academic Words(学术常用词)并未出现在过去年代的英文教材中,至于“国外学术场合常用词汇”这样的认知更无从谈起!然而时代在改变,在中国不断地反思和更新英语教育使之更“接地气”的过程中,现在的孩子无论是从教材、教学还是学习理念方面都有了革命性的成长,孩子们也越来越容易接受“常用词” “高频使用词汇”这样的认知,并在实际教学中,我们看到了学生在应用层面的逐步加强。

然而,在本土化的英文教学中,仍然有一点是与国外有着较大差异的,即通识教育。对于宇宙史、地质史常识的普及,对于生物进化、动物学、植物学的基本概念认知,甚至是对于人类文明起源、经济发展的了解——这些仍然是中国孩子所缺乏的,以至于在进行英语语言考试备考的过程中,学生们首先就可能被托福众多的学科分类基础用词吓坏了。所幸的是,托福出题官在文章内容题材方面仍然是“温柔的” ,同样一个核心话题,例如“苏美尔文明”值得从农业发展、手工业发展、宗教与城市发展、文字发展等角度,书写当时文明兴起的面貌。那么,对于备考托福的“福娃”们来说,学科分类词汇就有迹可循,且种种话题中出现的“高频词汇”更是能够通过在词汇书提前预习、再到阅读文章中发现的方式形成牢固的认知回路与记忆点,使得词汇记忆效率大大提高!
