Most of us would like to accomplish more than what we are able to in a day. How many times have you felt that it would be so much easier if you only had a few more extra hours in a day to complete the various tasks that you have on your plate? And how many times have you wished that you could do with a lesser amount of stress and strain that your workload is causing you?

The thing you need to know to overcome this feeling of being over laden with work all the time is to be able to manage your time better. And the most important thing to understand is that time management is not something that you can do as and when you feel that work is getting difficult to handle. It is a lifestyle that you need to adopt and practice each and every day of your life! It is a habit that will lead you to a life where you have peace of mind, better and more efficient work churn out and more time on your hands to do the things you enjoy.

The other thing to appreciate when you start off on your journey to be able to manage your time better is to be prepared that this change that you are going to adopt in your lifestyle will take some time to internalize. It is not something that you can switch on at will. But also be aware of the fact that once this change has been made, life will be much smoother.

There are many techniques that you can adopt to help you in managing your time better and get a kick-start in this process. And the best technique to start with is to learn how to focus on the job at hand. This can be done once you have prepared a list and prioritized the tasks that you have on hand. But once you have decided to take up a particular job, don't let yourself get distracted on the way. Don't allow thoughts on other projects to mingle and disturb your thought process. Ensure that you are determined to complete the job at hand before you allow your mind to take detours into other arenas awaiting attention. Avoid taking any kind of breaks while you are at that task and ensure that you complete it before you consider a cup of coffee or a call that you need to make.

Learning the tricks of determination, concentration and discipline shall ensure that after a while you will get so used to focusing on the task that you are doing that you will not need to consciously drive out errant thoughts from entering. At this level, you can safely assume that you have learnt one of the tricks of time management that will ensure that your work gets finished on time and is far better in quality than it used to be earlier.

Greg Woodburn, a sophomore at the University of Southern California, spends a lot of time cleaning sneakers. Some of them once belonged to him; some belonged to his friends. But soon the shoes will have new owners: underprivileged children in the United States and 20 other countries, thanks to Woodburn's Share Our Soles (S.O.S.) charity.

A high school track star in the beach town of Ventura, California, frustrated Woodburn was sidelined for months with knee and hip injuries.

“I started thinking about all the things I got from running—the health benefits, the friendships, the confidence,”he says.“And I realized there are children who don't even have shoes.”

Greg Woodburn's sneakers are fit for sharing.

Woodburn gathered up his own stash of slightly worn sneakers, then put out a call to teammates and the town. His goal was to have 100 pairs. When the count climbed to more than 500 pairs, he decided to turn the shoe drive into a year-round endeavor.

Back then, the sneakers came from donation boxes at the YMCA and the local sporting goods store and from door-to-door pickups. Woodburn has now set up collection boxes at two high schools, USC's gym and recreation center, and area races, and he has started accepting adult sizes and sandals. To date, S.O.S. has collected and donated more than 3,000 pairs.

And Woodburn has cleaned almost all of them (his parents and teammates help at exam time).“People think of it as dirty work,”he says.“But I like doing it. It's inspiring. It's not work I want to pass off to somebody else.”After sorting the shoes by size, Woodburn selects the sturdiest pairs for the washing machine and the threadbare ones for recycling. The rest he piles up by the kitchen sink at his family home in Ventura, and using a scrub brush and dishwashing liquid, he“gets in the zone,”he says.“As I work, I imagine who will get each pair.”It takes three to five minutes to clean one pair, he estimates, and he'll do up to 100 pairs at a time.“I try to set aside a good amount of time.”

To ship the footwear, Woodburn teamed with Sports Gift, a nonprofit organization that provides soccer and baseball equipment to children around the world. Keven Baxter, founder and president, says,“We'd send kids shin guards, balls, and shoes, and I'd hear that for many of these kids, the cleats were the only pair of shoes they had. They'd wear them to school and to do their chores. So Greg's running shoes were a nice addition for us.”

In just under three years, Woodburn has started three chapters of Share Our Soles: the original in Ventura, another at USC, and one at the College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts last January, when a student there wrote asking to get involved. The organization's website, shareoursoles.org, keeps a tally of sneakers that have been cleaned and distributed and sells wristbands and socks (the proceeds go toward new shoes and socks for children).

For many recipients, the shoes represent opportunity. Two young boys in Southern California attended school on alternate days because they shared a pair of shoes, held together with duct tape. They were too big for one boy and too small for the other. Thanks to S.O.S., each brother received his own pair of shoes. The boys now attend school daily and look forward to recess with their friends. When they graduate, they say, they will help strangers, just as Woodburn helped them.

在S.O.S.

I think my business colleague was a bit nervous when he first got into my Eagle Talon sports car. I was driving us to a few appointments that day. About halfway into our day on the road together, he said that he was pleasantly surprised about my driving. For some reason, he thought that since I drove a black sports car, I would be driving like a wild man. But much to his surprise, he noticed that I never sped or drove very aggressively. This is when I told him about my story about an accident many years ago that changed my driving habits forever.Negative Experiences That Change You for the Better

I was a young man in my mid twenties just starting my career. I decided to reward myself with a new car. It was a black Toyota Supra, the first car I ever bought on my own. After seeing the black Ferrari on Miami Vice, I wanted a black sports car as well. I seem to have a thing for black sports cars as I'm currently on my fourth one now and the next one will likely be a black Mustang.

I was driving in the fast lane westbound on the QEW (Queen Elizabeth Way), which is the highway that runs around Lake Ontario from Toronto to Niagara Falls. It was a Canadian winter day but the weather was clear and so were the roads, or so I thought.

Like many other vehicles on the highway, I was doing about 120 kilometers per hour in a 100 kilometers speed limit. Everything was smooth sailing on the highway until my car started to somehow lose grip on the road. I spun around 180 degrees and actually saw the other cars coming toward me as I went across all three lanes. Fortunately, my Supra ended up off the highway on the far side shoulder.

It was a miracle that I didn't get hit by any of the other vehicles as I went across the lanes but the side of my car did hit a post which resulted in my side window smashing apart. I was not hurt though so I came out extremely lucky.

What must have happened was that I hit some“black ice”on the highway. This is a term we use here in Canada that describes ice on the roads that drivers can't see. In my case, I was driving too fast in black ice conditions I was not aware of.

This single negative experience on the road changed my driving habits forever. Although it didn't change my personal taste for black sports cars, I no longer speed especially on the highways during winter months. Quite often in questionable winter days, I'm actually well under the speed limit and don't mind almost every other vehicle on the road passing me, even if they are driven by little old ladies. I would rather make it to my destinations in one piece.Life Without an Eraser

My real estate agent sends me regular newsletters and in one issue, I saw the following quote by John Gardner.

“Life is the art of drawing without an eraser.”

This quote pretty well sums up how to realistically live our lives. We all make mistakes and have some negative experiences in life. We don't have giant erasers to erase the bad circumstances we all go through. However, if we learn from these negative experiences, we can live our lives better in the future much like how the developing artist learns to draw better each day.

In my Toyota Supra black ice accident, which I can't erase, I quickly learned to change my driving habits. As a result, I have been accident free for the last twenty five years as a driver ever since (except for one small incident when another driver hit my car in a shopping mall parking lot).

Each day is a learning opportunity for us and having some bad experiences from time to time is just reality. We can't erase these bad experiences whether they are accidents, failures or mistakes, but we can certainly learn from them.
