Preface

Seventy years ago, when Chairman Mao Zedong solemnly proclaimed the founding of the People's Republic of China on the Tiananmen Rostrum, a new China has stood in the east of the world ever since.

In 1950, the new China accepted the first batch of 33 students from Eastern European countries. Since then, Chinese education began to go global, warmly welcome students from all over the world.

In 1978, China began to implement reform and opening-up policies. It adopted a strategic decision to send students to study abroad under the guidance of a "modernization-oriented, world-oriented and future-oriented"education in China. As a result, the nation has witnessed the largest and most extensive wave of studying abroad and returning home in China's history.

Today, education exchanges and cooperation between China and other countries are increasingly intensified. China has become an important destination for international students. In 2018, China received 492,200 students from 196 countries and regions after becoming Asia's largest and the world's major destination for international students for many years.

Over the past 70 years, China has developed from a "poor and blank"state into the world's second largest economy thanks to its people’s arduous endeavor. The living standards of Chinese people have been continuously improved, creating a "Chinese miracle" that has surprised the whole world.

Over the past 70 years, China's higher education has developed rapidly. The scale and quality of its education continues to improve, attracting more and more young foreign students and scholars to come and study. International students from all over the world, especially those from the developing countries, arrive in China to further their study of science and technology, education, foreign affairs, culture and management.

Over the past 70 years, the scholarly exchange of overseas students has been an important part of educational and cultural exchanges between China and the world. It helps deepen the friendship between Chinese and foreign young people, expand the opening-up of Chinese education sector, demonstrate the diversity and richness of human civilization and contribute greatly to the promotion of science, technology and civilization progress between China and foreign countries.

Over the past 70 years, numerous students from various countries not only have been learning knowledge, but also acted as envoys of friendship between China and the world. They brought their country's culture to the Chinese people, witnessed the magnificent development of China and delivered the achievements and features as a bridge. Thanks to their continuous effort, the people of the world have perceived the tremendous changes in China and the good wishes of Chinese people to pursue a better life and to build a shared destiny for humankind.

Compared with China’s 5,000 years of history, 70 years may not be long, but for those who have studied and are studying in China, it may be a good memory of eternal. In order to record their wonderful experiences, promote exchanges between students from different countries and enhance the friendship between Chinese people and foreign students, the Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange, entrusted by the Ministry of Education, organized the 3rd International Student Essay Contest. The contest has received warm response among Chinese universities, overseas students and graduates.A total of 670 essays have been received from more than 80 universities,Chinese embassies (consulates general), alumni organizations and individuals.Authors of these articles are from more than 100 countries.

After the contest organizing committee’s reviewing, we have selected five essays as the first prize, eight as the second prize, 16 as the third prize and 31 as outstanding award. All the winning works are written in fluent and vivid Chinese language. During the past two years, we have published two books titled My Beautiful Encounter with China with the subtitles of The Chinese Stories Told by International Students and International Students’ Stories on China’s Reform and Opening-up, respectively. As a third book of the series, this year’s subtitle is 70 Years of Development in the Eyes of International Students.

In this book, students from different countries depict the changes and development that China has made during the past 70 years. They also share their study experiences and feelings with readers. Akira Yagi, a Japanese citizen who lived in China as a child and returned China after grown up for further study, wrote: "I have experienced China before its reform and opening-up, and also witnessed China's take-off today. China has seen fundamental changes nearly in its every aspect during the past decades." Chuluunbaatar Munkhtuul,an international student from Mongolia, wrote: "Out of curiosity, I’m striving to look for the ‘secrets’ of China's rising." She was so eager to know answers. Later on, when conducting a field investigation, she found that "it was 'diligence' and'transportation' that changed China." Abdizhalilova Umsunai, from Kyrgyzstan, wrote: “China looks like a country on the rainbow, glittering with red passion, green development, blue serenity, orange vitality and purple mystery. When I stepped its mystic soils, my heart was full of yearning and timidity. And now I find this land is accepting me, giving me more new opportunities and raising me along with her. China shines like rainbows, and my love for her grows."

We hope the publication of this book will provide a window for the international students to show their personality, share their learning experiences, record China's development and changes, understand its progress as well as provide a link of ties with China.

Looking to the future, China is slated to expand its opening-up movement, strengthen education cooperation and exchanges with other countries and welcome more outstanding students to come and study. By 2020, the number of international students coming to China is expected to reach half a million. The Chinese government and universities will take more measures to create a better environment, integrate educational resources and provide more services for foreign students to study and live.

"A bosom friend afar brings a distant land near." Dear friends of international students, no matter where you go in the future, the 1.4 billion Chinese people will be your sincere friends and great partners. China's development will create a broader stage for you to display your talent. We sincerely hope that you will not only play a role in building your own country, but also pay attention to China's future development. By serving as the messengers of friendship between different peoples, you can make greater contributions to enhance economic, educational, cultural and diplomatic exchanges and cooperation between China and your motherland.Editorial CommitteeNovember 26, 2019

[Mongolia] Chuluunbaatar Munkhtuul, Minzu University of China

In the years when I studied in China, I came to realize that foreigners in China didn’t talk much about the development of Western countries such as the US and UK. Instead they were more focused on the development of China. We often discuss why China has developed so quickly, how the Chinese people become so well-off and what accelerates the development of China.Out of curiosity, I’m striving to look for the “secrets” of China’s development. In the beginning, I made quite a few hypotheses but none of them was proved. Finally, a field study of anthropology in Anxi county, Fujian Province helped me understand the basic facts of China, which brought about the breakthrough of my journey of “exploration”. It’s “diligence” and “transportation” that changed China.

Traveling among the surprising beauty of China’s natural scenic views, I observed the daily life of Chinese people and was impressed by their diligence.I believe that the Chinese people are the most diligent on earth. To take Anxi people as an example, most of them are running a tea business. They wake up at 4-5 o’clock in the morning and never stop their hard work until midnight. It seems that they have faith to relieve the toil of day and night. Even the muggy air cannot hinder their steps of striving for their reward. The tea growers work day and night. In the morning, they carry tea and go to the township to sell;in the afternoon, they return home and work in tea garden without rest. Busy and toilsome, people of the other industries work in the same style, but they never complain about it. As one Chinese saying goes, “when the people are better off, the nation grows stronger.” The development of citizens, families and the nation are complementary. The fast development of China comes from the diligence of each individual of all walks of life and their families they are supporting.

However, the Chinese people were also diligent and worked harder a century ago. Why was there no fast development at that time in China? What is the reason behind it? The answer is “transportation”.

In Anxi, my study on the family culture of Han people focuses on patriarchal clan and ancestor worship. There are 438 villages in the county. The patriarchal clan of each village has its own style of worship. To understand their characteristics of worship, I went to villages for an interview every day. This daily investigation was impossible for an overseas student 100 years ago due to the bumpy journey. However today, convenient transportation makes it easy. Every day, different vehicles such as bus, coach and taxi are available to accommodate my itinerary. The convenience of transportation benefits not only researchers but also the locals for their businesses, tea trade and daily life. On my way to the villages, I often met residents going to bazaars. The drivers even help them transport their goods to an appointed place. The transportation accelerates the local economy. It is hard to imagine how they could live without this traffic convenience. It takes one day or two days by walk to a township of 100 kilometers away; however only one hour or two hours by coach. This convenience saves businessmen’s time and makes the diligence of local people more efficient with a shortened cycle and more achievements. It also enables them to have easier access to goods, so they are more confident to pursuit for a happy life. I believe convenient transportation achieved by the Chinese Government is the basis of Chinese people’s happy life as well as the basis of China’s development including economic development.

The relationship between family and nation is mutually beneficial.Thousands of families of different industries work hard for a rich and powerful nation, and the nation in turn invests public finance for people’s wellbeing. This pattern moves in cycles for gradual development. The winding roads on the lands of China connect not only each piece of lands but also every family. The convenience of transportation enables the diligence of the Chinese people to compose the bright future for China and the rest of the world.

Traveling Thousands of Miles in China[日本] 北鸣美希 北方工业大学[Japan] Kitanaru Miki, North China University of Technology

In July 2018 I came to North University of Technology, a sister school,to study Chinese. During the half-year-long period as an overseas student,I attended the immersive Chinese teaching program and visited many new places in China during my holidays.

Among the places that I drove to, Chengde and Bashang Grassland in Hebei Province look like fairyland; The Grass Skyline of Chongli in Zhangjiakou,Hebei Province keep people entranced so much; Jinci Temple and Qiao Family Courtyard, cultural treasures of Northwest China, historical cities like Zhengzhou and ancient capital city of Xi’an are so attractive; and the grand Hukou Waterfall of Yellow River shows its mystery beauty. But the most unforgettable experience was the eight-day trip to Tibet. Although it was my first time to Tibet, and what I could get was quite limited, I saw a great change that happened China during my travel, which filled the blank of my understanding of China and made me feel more respectable to China and aroused my love to China.

A Chinese saying goes “Read ten thousand books and travel ten thousand miles,” which means the good integration between knowledge and action is the best way for language learning. The deepest impression that I had during my study in China was not roasted duck, Chinese hamburger, sweet and sour pork, Xinjiang baked Naan, not the historical Jinci Temple or the Spring Festival atmosphere of Tang Dynasty Sleepless City in Xi’an, but the crisscrossed expressways that connect every corner of China.

I heard China was a leading country in infrastructure building. I did not have the real feeling until arrived in China. In fact, what amazed me most was not the high speed, wideness and length of China’s roads, but the newness and magnificence of expressways and the new cultural landscapes they created. There are many new landscapes beside every expressway. While driving on the expressway, beautiful scenes unceasingly enter your eyesight, seeming walking into the gallery of nature. One is easily fascinated by the Grass Skyline of Chongli for the blue sky and steep mountains, white cloud and thin fog, meadow and flowers; the expressway from Lhasa in Tibet to Nyingchi, which links beautiful scenes of highland, snow mountain, valley of Lhasa and Yalu Tsangpo River, unfolds the untouchable landscapes before your eyes.

While China’s road builders were constructing these expressways, they built bridges on rivers or between two mountains or dug tunnels through mountains. They gradually turned natural barriers into smooth roads one by one. These roads become passages of the cultural landscape, turning closeness into openness, making natural resources to be effectively used, broadening people’s view, protecting original ecology, improving living conditions of local people and speeding up local economic development. In fact, it is a proper act for local governments to support the building of roads. Once the roads were built, businesses of farmhouses and tourism industry along the roads will arouse, which embodies the conviction of “lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets” of Chinese government administration.

Speaking of the new landscapes along China’s expressways, I think there is another element that deserves attention, which is the pursuit of environmental protection during the construction. For example, in places such as mash, wetland and grassland, engineers apply measures of bridgebuilding to avoid damage to the ecological environment. Such measures not only protect the environment and benefit to the free migration of wild animals, but also guarantee the development of animal husbandry. It is safe to say that China’s road builders are quite wise and warm-hearted. They have tried their best to make each highway integrate into the society and natural environment,to create city roads with more beautiful landscape and country roads closely connecting to nature.

I am honored to witness the vitality and hope of China. But I eagerly look forward to staying longer in China while I come again, because I want to visit more places where I have never been to. Besides, I want to drive on China’s magnificent and endless expressways again and again. I believe, by that time my understanding of China will be more complete.
