Section A: English to Chinese

Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. These passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither, in a wayward course over a deep ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of despair.

I have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy—so great that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of my life for a few hours for this joy. I have sought it, next, because it relieves loneliness—that terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousness looks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable lifeless abyss. I have sought it, finally, because in the union of love I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined. This is what I sought, and though it might seem too good for human life, this is what at last I have found.

With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to understand the hearts of men. I have wished to know why the stars shine...A little of this, but not much, I have achieved.【

When did Chinese own ancient vernacular turn into European-Chinese vernacular? It would come down to western missionaries who came to China in recent years, because they created the first European-Chinese vernacular. At first, they spoke Chinese in the form of classical languages. Chinese scholar-bureaucrats believed in Confucianism and always resisted on Christianity, which made western missionaries pay more attention to develop low-educated and illiterate people to become their followers. Therefore, European-Chinese vernacular came into their views on that condition.

Source Text 1:

Man is the creature of interest and ambition. His nature leads him forth into the struggle and bustle of the world. Love is but the embellishment of his early life, or a song piped in the intervals of the acts. He seeks for fame, for fortune, for space in the world’s thought, and dominion over his fellow-men. But a woman’s whole life is a history of the affections. The heart is her world; it is there her ambition strives for empire—it is there her avarice seeks for hidden treasures. She sends forth her sympathies on adventure; she embarks her whole soul in the traffic of affection; and if shipwrecked her case is hopeless—for it is a bankruptcy of the heart.

To a man, the disappointment of love may occasion some bitter pangs; it wounds some feelings of tenderness—it blasts some prospects of felicity; but he is an active being—he may dissipate his thoughts in the whirl of varied occupation, or may plunge into the tide of pleasure; or, if the scene of disappointment be too full of painful associations, he can shift his abode at will, and taking, as it were, the wings of the morning, can fly to the uttermost parts of the earth, and be at rest.【参考译文】

Source Text 2:

All the scientific studies that human beings have done so far can be divided into three categories: natural science, social science, and humanities. This classification is reasonable because it aims at different objects. Not only from the synchronic perspective it’s just so, but also from the diachronic perspective to see is the same. These three categories of research are actually three mutually connected “worlds”: From the beginning of heaven and earth and the universe, the relatively still world with only minerals and plants isn’t the natural world until the first kind of animals comes to birth; the emergence of animals has led to the formation of groups of individuals who can move freely, then there’s a need to coordinate relationships and exchange information, so the second world—social world—appears at this time. Animals evolved to human beings and the human world comes out, which is different from the second world in humans’ possessing languages and thoughts. All disciplines can be grouped into these three categories, of course, there may be cross among disciplines or belong to all the three categories. However, the discipline should have a basic attribution, and the basic attribution is the essence of the discipline.
