TEST FOR ENGLISH MAJORS (2005)-GRADE FOUR-TIME LIMIT: 130 MIN

PART Ⅰ  DICTATION [15 MIN]

Listen to the following passage. Altogether the passage will be read to you four times. During the first reading, which will be read at normal speed, listen and try to understand the meaning. For the second and third readings, the passage will be read sentence by sentence, or phrase by phrase, with intervals of 15 seconds. The last reading will be read at normal speed again and during this time you should check your work. You will then be given 2 minutes to check through your work once more.

Please write the whole passage on ANSWER SHEET ONE.【参考答案】The Wrist Watch

①It is generally believed that wrist watches are an exception to the normal sequence in the evolution of man’s jewelry. ②Reversing the usual order, they were first worn by women, and then adopted by men. ③In the old days, queens included wrist watches among their crown jewelry. ④Later, they were worn by Swiss workers and farmers. ⑤Until World WarⅠ, Americans associated the watch with fortune hunters. ⑥Then army officers discovered that the wrist watch was most practical for active combat. ⑦Race car drivers also loved to wear wrist watches, and pilots found them most useful while flying. ⑧Soon men dared to wear wrist watches without feeling self-conscious. ⑨By 1924, some 30 percent of man’s watches were worn on the wrist. ⑩Today, the figure is 90 percent, and they are now worn by both men and women for practical purposes rather than for decoration.【难点点评】(1)句①中,“It is believed that ...” (3)句③中,“in the old days”表“从前,过去的时候”,“the”不能删;注意谓语动词的时态,由“in the old days”可知,讲的是过去的事,所以“include”用一般过去时。(4)句⑤中,“associated ... with ...” (5)句⑥中,注意“... as most practical”中没有“the”,不要写成“the most practical”。

In Sections A, B and C you will hear everything once only. Listen carefully and then answer the questions that follow. Mark the correct answer to each question on your answer sheet.

SECTION A  CONVERSATIONS

In this section you will hear several conversations. Listen to the conversations carefully and then answer the questions that follow.

Questions 1 to 3 are based on the following conversation. At the end of the conversation, you will be given 15 seconds to answer the questions.

Now listen to the conversation.

1. According to the conversation, Mr Johnson is NOT very strong in _____.

A. history

B. geography

C. mathematics

D. art

2. Mr Johnson thinks that _____ can help him a lot in the job.

A. logic

B. writing

C. history

D. mathematics

3. Mr Johnson would like to work as a(n) _____.

A. adviser

B. computer programmer

C. product designer

D. school teacher【

Mr. Johnson在对话中说“I’ve been told that working with computers needs a logical mind rather than great skills in mathematics”,他了解到编写计算机软件程序需要逻辑思维能力,而不是数学方面的能力,学习成绩表明他的逻辑能力是不错的,因此选A。

F: Good morning. Sit down, please, Mr. Johnson.

M: Thank you, ma’am.

F: I have read your letter here. You seem to have done very well at school. Can you tell me something about your schoolwork?

M: As you can see, my stronger subjects were art subjects. My best subject was history, and my second best was geography. However, my favorite subject was math. And the results I got in the math paper were quite reasonable.

F: That’s true. Now can you tell me why you think these subjects will help you in this job?

M: Well, ma’am, I understand that you manufacture computers, prepare software, and advise clients on how to use them. Is that right?

F: That’s right.

M: And I’ve been told that working with computers needs a logical mind rather than great skills in mathematics. That’s especially true, I believe, when it comes to writing programs. So I think my results show that I have some ability in logic and in mathematics as well.

F: So you would like to write material for computers, would you?

M: Yes, ma’am. That’s what interests me most about computers, writing programs. But I think the computer industry itself is still expanding enormously. I’m sure that career prospects of the industry would be very good no matter what sort of job I went into.

F: I see. Well, thank you. I enjoyed our talk. We’ll be writing to you.

M: Thank you, ma’am. Good bye.

F: Just a moment. I’m taking notes. Phone number, right.

M: Then we need the full name, address and phone number of the person you are sending the parcel to.

F: Ok. Anything else?

M: Yes, the weight and dimensions of the parcel, that’s height, width, and length, and the value of the goods and the full description.

The International Red Cross or Red Crescent Museum was opened in Geneva in 1988. It tells a story of men and women who in the course of the major events of the last 150 years have given assistance to victims of war and national disasters. The organization was established in 1868 and was based on an idea by a Swiss businessman called Henry Durant. He had witnessed the heavy causalities of the battle of South Foreno in Italy four years earlier, in which 40,000 people were killed, wounded, or missing. He had seen the lack of medical services in the great suffering of many of the wounded, who simply died from lack of care. The International Red Cross or Red Crescent exists to help the victims of conflicts and disasters regardless of their nationalities. The symbol of the organization was originally just the Red Cross. It has no religious significance. The founders of the movement adopted it as a tribute to Switzerland. However, during the Russo-Turkish War, the Turks thought the cross could be seen as offensive to Muslim soldiers. And the second symbol, the Red Crescent, was adopted for use by national organizations in the Islamic world. Both are now official symbols.

根据文中“It practices special shouts, dances, and athletic shows”,可知B正确。

故选A。

根据倒数第四句“Cheerleaders have their own contests every year at local, state and national levels”,所以选项B是错误的。

At major college or high school sports events, cheer leaders, both male and female, jump and dance in front of the crowd, and shout the name of their team, running around yelling, “Go, team! Go!” The first cheerleader ever was a man. In 1898, Johnny Camble jumped in front of the crowd at the University of Minnesota and shouted for his team. He shouted, “Hurrah, Minnesota!” This was the first organized shout or yell. For the next 32 years, cheerleaders were men only. Cheer leading is not just about cheering. It practices special shouts, dances, and athletic shows. The men throw the women high in the air and catch them. The team members climb on each other’s shoulders to make a human pyramid. They yell and dance, too. It is like human fireworks. Of course, they may often suffer serious knee and wrist injuries and boldly noses. Cheerleaders have their own contests every year at local, state and national levels. And the crowd shouts for them. It is not fair to think cheer leading is just being cheerful and lively and having a loud voice. Cheer leading is a sport in itself.
