By Alexander M. Schindler

The art of living is to know when to hold fast and when to let go. For life is a paradox: it enjoins us to cling to its many gifts even while it ordains (注定) their eventual relinquishment. The rabbis of old put it this way: "A man comes to this world with his fist clenched, but when he dies, his hand is open."

Surely we ought to hold fast to life, for it is wondrous (绝妙的), and full of a beauty that breaks through every pore of God's own earth. We know that this is so, but all too often we recognize this truth only in our backward glance when we remember what it was and then suddenly realize that it is no more…❶

…Here then is the first pole of life's paradoxical demands on us: Never too busy for the wonder and the awe of life. Be reverent before each dawning day. Embrace each hour. Seize each golden minute.

Hold fast to life...but not so fast that you cannot let go. This is the second side of life's coin, the opposite pole of its paradox: We must accept our losses, and learn how to let go…

…At every stage of life we sustain losses—and grow in the process. We begin our independent lives only when we emerge from the womb (子宫) and lose its protective shelter. We enter a progression of schools, then we leave our mothers and fathers and our childhood homes. We get married and have children and then have to let them go. We face the gradual or not so gradual waning of our own ➋strength. And ultimately, as the parable of the open and closed hand suggests, we must confront the inevitability of our own demise, losing ourselves, as it were, all that we were or dreamed to be.➌

But why should we be reconciled to life's contradictory demands? Why fashion things of beauty when beauty is evanescent? Why give our heart in love when those we love will ultimately be torn from our grasp?

In order to resolve this paradox, we must seek a wider perspective, viewing our lives as through windows that open on eternity➍. Once we do that, we realize that though our lives are finite, our deeds on earth weave a timeless pattern.

Life is never just being. It is a becoming, a relentless flowing on. Our parents live on through us, and we will live on through our children. The institutions we build endure, and we will endure through them. The beauty we fashion cannot be dimmed by death. Our flesh may perish, our hands will wither, but that which they create in beauty and goodness and truth lives on for all time to come…

And ultimately, as the parable of the open and closed hand suggests, we must confront the inevitability of our own demise, losing ourselves, as it were, all that we were or dreamed to be.

该句主干为we must confront the inevitability of our own demise。as the parable of the open and closed hand suggests为状语从句,as表示“正如”。 our own demise)一起发生的。后面的as it were意为“可以这么说”,all that we were or dreamed to be形容ourselves,表明无论是曾经拥有的还是梦想拥有的一切,都会随着躯体的死亡而消散。

❶ This is the second side of life's coin, the opposite pole of its paradox: We must accept our losses, and learn how to let go…

➋ Our flesh may perish, our hands will wither, but that which they create in beauty and goodness and truth lives on for all time to come…

Johnny failed the exam. His friend asked, "Why did you get such a low grade?" "Because of an absence," Johnny answered. "You mean you were absent on the day of the test?" "No, but the kid who sits next to me was."02 Power of Self-talk自我交谈的力量

Life is like a big swing, dangling between the depths of happiness ❶and sadness. As soon as we descend down the slope of sadness, we ➋accelerate over the ever-feelgood acclivity (斜坡) of happiness. At times of distress when we are down and slip over an abyss of emotional trauma and frustrations, one who can rise above the occasion is the architect of many wins over sorrows. 1

When you are feeling low, lost and confused, you have to pep yourself up to come above tougher times. This can be done effectively by self-talk. Self-talk is a way of talking to oneself. It can be effectively used for soul searching. When talking to ourselves, we hardly lie as ➌our conscience controls our speech. Self-talk is efficient because ➍when we are vocal about our thoughts, it makes a larger impact on our mind. Our brain then receives the same message from the mind as well as the ears. This repetition of pep talks and thoughts fine tunes the performance of the brain.

Self-talk is a software, which when properly loaded onto our mind directs ourselves for better results and a healthy mind. 2 Actually many times in our life, we find others advising us to do better in studies, ➎sports, life, etc. We usually get bugged by these people and blank our ➏ears out of their constructive suggestions. It is because it doesn't come from within us. And when something comes from within you, you always try your best to do justice to it. Self-talk can thus improve our status.

Each one of us has some good points and some bad ones. Though we hardly admit in public, we know in our mind that we could do better in some areas of our personal landscape. Such attitude can ➐be converted into a practical reality using self-talk.

If you are an introvert and you want to be the gregarious person like your friend next door, all you need to do is talk to yourself. Tell yourself with all the sincerity and emotions that "I can be like him. I am a natural born speaker. I do like people and speaking comes naturally to me. I just have to be ready to listen and speak." Suppose you love a person and want to tell him or her, then just say to yourself, "I love her with all my heart. She is the only one and I know it. If I don't let her ➑know, it would be grave injustice on my part. Every person loves to be loved. Even she will." These are just some examples I have explained. It's up to you to program your own mantra.

If you want to do better, there is no better motivator than self-talk. So guys, start talking.

As I write, a gentle, much needed rain is falling this morning. It has been a dry spring here in Vermont. So dry in fact, that the Spring Peepers were late enough in coming that many thought that these amazing little frogs would fail to bless us with their song this year.1 But they came, and I can't fault them for being tardy. In almost any seasonal wetland in the state these frogs can be heard. They are a ❶sign of spring, and of rebirth and renewal.

It is late June and the mountain snow has left the higher slopes of the mountains. Folks have planted their gardens, even though there is still the threat of frost. Yes, it is almost July, yet in the evenings here, ➋the thermometer can still sometimes dip into the low-thirties this time of year. My family planted our garden during the last weekend of May, and frost came twice since then, luckily not a killing frost. But others were not so lucky. There is a very ambitious gardener in the village that lost most of his non-hardy plants this year. There is a saying in this state: "If you don't like the weather, wait five minutes." This spring ➌has demonstrated the validity of this old saw.

I enjoy the juxtaposition of the vagaries of the climate and the steady rhythms of life here. Folks have been tending to the chores of spring for generations, knowing full well that they really can't depend upon the hand that nature will deal them. 2 Planting a garden in ➍Vermont amounts to an act of faith. Will our sweat and toil be rewarded by abundance enough to share with our friends and extended families, or will a killing frost render these efforts in futility?

And I have planted more than a garden this year. My family was recently faced with a tough decision, do we leave this place and the people whom we have come to know and love, or do we stay and make a commitment. Well, we have decided that this is where we will make our stand. Along with our little garden, this year we have planted ourselves. And this is no less an act of faith than the one mentioned above. Will my family be blessed with that which is needed to grow and flourish? We have no way of knowing this...but we do have faith. The rain has stopped and the sun is shining. Strong winds have blown the cloud cover away. It is a beautiful day.

There is another saying among farmers here: "There is no better ➎fertilizer than a farmer's footprints." To me this means that which is planted must be revisited often. The garden must be nurtured and tended. It must be cared for with love. It seems to me that this applies ➏to our lives as well. Hopes and dreams and aspirations must be ➐revisited often lest we lose sight of the things that are really important to us. Commitments must be tended to as carefully as any garden plot. ➑But as with gardening, there are no guarantees. But there is faith, and today is a beautiful day.

make one's stand

1 So dry in fact, that the Spring Peepers were late enough in coming that many thought that these amazing little frogs would fail to bless us with their song this year.

本句主干是(It is)dry,省略了it is。that the Spring Peepers were late enough in coming为 so…that… that these amazing little frogs would fail to bless us with their song this year是宾语从句,做thought的宾语。

2 Folks have been tending to the chores of spring for generations, knowing full well that they really can't depend upon the hand that nature will deal them.

Folks have been tending to the chores of spring for generations,为主谓宾结构。knowing full well… that they really can't depend upon the hand that nature will deal them为宾语从句,做knowing的宾语。

❶ I enjoy the juxtaposition of the vagaries of the climate and the steady rhythms of life here.

➋ The rain has stopped and the sun is shining. Strong winds have blown the cloud cover away. It is a beautiful day.

➌ There is no better fertilizer than a farmer's footprints.

One evening I drove my husband's car to the shopping mall. On my return, I noticed that how dusty the outside of his car was and cleaned it up a bit. When I finally entered the house, I called out, "The woman who loves you the most in the world just cleaned your headlights and windshield."

My husband looked up and said, "Mom's here?"

Teacher: Why are you late for school every morning?

Tom: Every time I come to the corner, a sign says, "School—Go slow."04 Three Days to See假如给我三天光明

By Helen Adams Keller

…If, by some miracle, I were granted three seeing days, to be followed by a relapse into darkness, I should divide the period into three parts.

On the first day, I should want to see the people whose kindness and gentleness and companionship have made my life worth living. ❶First I should like to gaze long upon the face of my dear teacher, Mrs. Anne Sullivan Macy, who came to me when I was a child and opened the outer world to me…

…I should call to me all my dear friends and look long into their faces, imprinting upon my mind the outward evidences of the beauty that is within them…

…And I should like to look into the loyal, trusting eyes of my dogs… whose friendships are so comforting to me…

…I should also view the small simple things of my home…

…I should take a long walk in the woods and intoxicate my eyes on the beauties of the world…

…The next day I should arise with the dawn and see the thrilling miracle by which night is transformed into day…➋➌➍

…This day I should devote to a hasty glimpse of the world, past and present. I should want to see the pageant of man's progress, the kaleidoscope of the ages…through the museums…

…My next stop would be the Metropolitan Museum of Art, for just ➎as the Museum of Natural History reveals the material aspects of the world, so does the Metropolitan show the myriad facets of the human spirit…1➏

…I should try to probe into the soul of man through this art…

…The evening of my second day of sight I should spend at a theatre or at the movies…

…The following morning, I should again greet the dawn, anxious ➐to discover new delights…the dawn of each day must be a perpetually new revelation (展现) of beauty.

This, according to the terms of my imagined miracle, is to be my third and last day of sight. I shall have no time to waste in regrets or longings; there is too much to see…

…I start from my home in the quiet little suburb of Forest Hills, Long Island… I drive across the lacy (带状的) structure of steel which spans the East River, and I get a new and startling vision of the power and ingenuity of the mind of man…

…Now I begin my rounds of the city. First, I stand at a busy corner, merely looking at people, trying by sight of them to understand something of their lives…➑➒

…I stroll down Fifth Avenue. I throw my eyes out of focus, so that I see no particular object but only a seething kaleidoscope of colors…

…On the evening of that last day I should again run away to the theater, to a hilariously funny play, so that I might appreciate the overtones of comedy in the human spirit.

At midnight my temporary respite from blindness would cease, and permanent night would close in on me again… I who am blind can give one hint to those who see… Use your eyes as if tomorrow you would be stricken (受打击) blind… 2
