Who does what to whom。II.

North Korea Fires Seven MissilesAssociated Press, Sunday, July 5, 2009

North Korea fired seven ballistic missiles off its eastern coast yesterday, South Korea said, a violation of UN resolutions seen as a message of defiance to the U.S. on Independence Day. The launches, which came two days after North Korea fired what were believed to be four short-range cruise missiles, will increase tension as America tries to muster support for tough enforcement of the latest Security Council resolution after Pyongyang’s May nuclear test.▼New words▼文章评析

按照Who does what to whom的理解原则,我们知道,朝鲜昨天向东部近海发射了7枚弹道导弹。 III. Text A Obama Makes Surprise Visit to IraqThe New York Times, April 7, 2009

The drought is concentrated in the southwest, where 12.6 million people are short of water. The drought began in early July and has caused 2reservoirs and rivers to dry up.

British Father and Two Children Killed in France as Car Smashes into Motorway BridgeThe Daily Telegraph, April 24, 2016

(1) A British father, his ten-year-old son and four-year-old daughter have died on a French motorway after the car they were travelling in went over a railing, smashed against a wall and then landed in a crumpled heap back on the road.

(2) The 31-year-old man’s wife was seriously injured in the horrific crash and the couple’s three-year-old son who was also in the car was in a critical condition after being helicoptered to a nearby hospital.

(3) The accident occurred around 7:15 a.m. local time on Sunday morning as the family’s Nissan car was travelling south on the A39 motorway between Dijon and Bourg-en-Bresse, police said.

(4) Police have not released the names of the victims and said it was not clear what caused the vehicle to veer off the road and smash into the concrete wall of a motorway bridge.

(5) “The crash may have been due to the driver falling asleep at the wheel or perhaps the driver was distracted by something and veered to the right,” said senior regional official Georges Bos at the crash site.

(6) The three children were thrown from the car as it turned over after smashing into the wall, France 3 TV station reported.

(7) “After the father was extricated from the vehicle he went into cardiac arrest and was declared dead minutes later by a doctor,” Patrick Landry, who supervised the rescue operation, told the station.

(8) The roof of the car was torn off by the impact and the vehicle was left on its side in the middle of the road, with the family’s belongings strewn across the motorway.

(9) Two helicopter ambulances were called in to evacuate the injured and police closed off the motorway for several hours.

(10) A psychologist was brought in to counsel the two dozen rescue workers who worked at the crash site.▼New words▼

(1) Baghdad (AP) — A suicide blast targeting Iraqi security forces 1and subsequent clashes with Islamic State extremists on Tuesday 2killed at least 23 troops and pro-government Sunni fighters in the 3country’s embattled western province of Anbar, officials said.

(2) The day’s heavy toll for the Iraqi forces came as they struggle in battles against the Islamic State group and try to claw back territory 4lost to the extremists during the militants’ blitz last year. Iraq’s Prime 5Minister vowed on Tuesday to dislodge IS militants from all areas under their control.

(3) Police officials said a suicide bomber first struck a gathering of 6pro-government Sunni fighters near the town of al-Baghdadi, about 180 kilometers (110 miles) northwest of Baghdad, in the morning hours.

(4) Soon after, IS militants attacked nearby army and police positions, setting off hours-long clashes. Police and hospital officials said 23 were killed and 28 were wounded in all on the government side. They did not give the death toll on the militants’ side, saying only 7that the attackers “sustained some casualties” and declining to 8provide further details. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.9

(5) In Baghdad, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi pledged that Iraq’s forces would retake all areas that fell to IS during last summer’s stunning blitz.

(6) “We will emerge as victorious and the day our lands are liberated is nearing,” al-Abadi told a group of newly-graduated army 10officers, speaking at the Military Academy as Iraq marked Army Day. “Our goal ... is that peace and prosperity prevail in Iraq and end this dark period in Iraqi history.”

(7) A parade was also staged to mark the day, complete with jet fighters, helicopters and transport planes flying overhead.

(8) Meanwhile, the Islamic State group announced killing eight 11men in Salahuddin province north of Baghdad for allegedly cooperating with government forces and airstrikes by the U.S.-led coalition targeting the militant group.

(9) The group posted photographs showing eight blindfolded and 12bearded men in orange jumpsuits, their hands tied behind their backs. Five were identified as police officers and two as informants, but no information was provided on the eighth victim. The photos show the men by a riverbank next to masked gunmen, under what looks like a bridge. They are on their knees as the gunmen appear to be readying to shoot them. Other photos show bloodied bodies of seven of the men, lying on the ground.

(10) The Islamic State group provided no details on the purported 13killings. The authenticity of the photos could not be independently 14verified but they were posted late Monday on a Twitter account frequently used by the militant group.

(11) However, a provincial official, who spoke on condition of anonymity fearing for his safety, offered a different account on the photos, saying Tuesday that the men depicted in the images were
