PREFACE
Lin Sheng is a wonderful daughter, sister and mother.
She is also my amazing wife.
We have had many wonderful adventures together, this book is about our adventure riding a motorcycle through the Alps.
We rode through five different countries enjoying all of their individual characteristics and local cuisines. Resting overnight in hotels that were independently or family owned, sometimes for hundreds of years, mostly in small towns and villages.
Riding on a motorcycle we truly experienced all of our surroundings, the smell of the wild flowers by the side of the road, or maybe the barnyard full of cows and goats. We felt the freshness of the morning air and sunshine on our face as well as the stinging rain and bitter cold winds. All of these experiences are very exciting and memorable, but to have shared them together with Lin makes them even more special.
You will read how some of our days were enjoyable hours of traveling over a few mountain passes and enjoying the crystal clear streams or waterfalls coming from the freshly melted snow, stopping for coffee and finding some small local place for lunch, taking pictures of wildflowers in the valleys, and then enjoying a relaxing evening at our hotel. And you will read of some of our days doing hundreds of hairpin turns, one after the other while climbing the steep high mountains, so terrified to look over the side of the road where there was no protection and no bottom in sight if you were to go over. And some of our days riding in the rain and sleet, hour after hour, turn after turn, riding over one mountain, then another, then another, sometimes the visibility so bad we could barely see the road a foot in front of us, with those same shear drop offs always on our mind. Wondering if we would ever make it to our next hotel. But on those days the dinners were especially good and the conversations would be full of excitement and pride for the days accomplishments.
Then the hard part of trying to put all of that day’s excitement and adventures out of our mind, and not get too worried about the adventures coming our way the next day and get some sleep. Sometimes rest seemed impossible.
Lin’s experience before this trip was just a few hours of riding a motorcycle in our area of South Texas. These rides were on long straight wide roads, she thought she knew what it was like to travel by motorcycle. After only our first day of riding on the narrow mountain roads of Europe, she said “I thought I was going to die so many times today!” And just about every evening after that were the same words. But she kept going, every day, and at the end of our journey she was so proud of her bravery and endurance and of all of our new experiences together. Now, she is so excited to share all of these experience with you in this book.
So I hope you enjoy reading about our motorcycle adventures through Lin’s writings, I truly hope it inspires you to dream about, plan and take an adventure of your own.Philip Carter序

最困难的事，是我们总想忘记白天的兴奋和冒险，不去想第二天的冒险，好好睡一觉。但事实上做不到，我们根本无法好好休息。
骑越阿尔卑斯山之前，林的骑行体验，只有几小时，骑行在我们德州南部，平整宽阔的大路上，她以为她知道什么是摩托车旅行了。所以，在欧洲，经历了第一天险窄的高山骑行后，她说：“我以为我今天会死掉好几次！”当然，后来每天晚上她都说同样的话。但是她每天坚持前进。当旅行结束时，她为我们一起完成的旅行骄傲，为自己的勇敢和忍耐力骄傲，为我们一起获得的新体验骄傲！现在，她很兴奋地，和你们一起，在书里分享她的经历。
