Goldie's Secret

She turned up at the doorstep of my house in Cornwall. No way could I have sent her away.No way,not me anyway.Maybe someone had kicked her out of their car the night before.“We're moving house.”“No space for her any more with the baby coming.”“We never really wanted her,but what could we have done? She was a present.”People find all sorts of excuses for abandoning an animal. And she was one of the most beautiful dogs I had ever seen.

I called her Goldie. If I had known what was going to happen I would have given her a more creative name. She was so unsettled during those first few days. She hardly ate anything and had such an air of sadness about her. There was nothing I could do to make her happy,it seemed.Heaven knows what had happened to her at her previous owner's.But eventually at the end of the first week she calmed down.Always by my side, whether we were out on one of our long walks or sitting by the fire.

That's why it was such a shock when she pulled away from me one day when we were out for a walk.We were a long way from home, when she started barking and getting very restless.Eventually I couldn't hold her any longer and she raced off down the road towards a farmhouse in the distance as fast as she could.

By the time I reached the farm I was very tired and upset with Goldie. But when I saw her licking the four puppies I started to feel sympathy towards them.“We didn't know what had happened to her,”said the woman at the door.“I took her for a walk one day, soon after the puppies were born, and she just disappeared.”“She must have tried to come back to them and got lost,”added a boy from behind her.

I must admit I do miss Goldie, but I've got Nugget now,and she looks just like her mother. And I've learnt a good lesson:not to judge people. The 9-year-old boy was abandoned by his alcoholic father. unsettled adj. I felt pretty unsettled all that week. heaven n. The new kitchen is heaven compared to the old one. Heaven knows what the true unemployment rate is. He appears to be pulling away from his rivals in the election campaign. lick v.舔:Paul put down the chicken and licked his fingers. puppy n.小狗,幼犬:Our dog had seven puppies.

Usually, when your teacher asks a question, there is only one correct answer. But there is one question that has millions of correct answers. That question is“What's your name?”Everyone gives a different answer, but everyone is correct.

Have you ever wondered about people's names?Where do they come from? What do they mean?

People's first names,or given names, are chosen by their parents.Sometimes the name of a grandparent or other member of the family is used. Some parents choose the name of a well-known person.A boy could be named George Washington Smith;a girl could be named Helen Keller Jones.

Some people give their children names that mean good things.Clara means“bright”;Beatrice means“one who gives happiness”;Donald means“world ruler”;Leonard means“as brave as a lion”.

The earliest last names,or surnames, were taken from place names.A family with the name Brook or Brooks probably lived near a brook;someone who was called Longstreet probably lived on a long, paved road. The Greenwood family lived in or near a leafy forest.

Other early surnames came from people's occupations. The most common occupational name is Smith, which means a person who makes things with iron or other metals. In the past, smiths were very important workers in every town and village. Some other occupational names are:Carter—a person who owned or drove a cart;Potter—a person who made pots and pans.

The ancestors of the Baker family probably baked bread for their neighbors in their native village. The Carpenter's great-great-great-grandfather probably built houses and furniture.

Sometimes people were known for the color of their hair or skin,or their size,or their special abilities. When there were two men who were named John in the same village, the John with the gray hair probably became John Gray.Or the John who was very tall could call himself John Tallman.John Fish was probably an excellent swimmer and John Lightfoot was probably a fast runner or a good dancer.

Some family names were made by adding something to the father's name.English-speaking people added -son or -s.The Johnsons are descendants of John;the Roberts family's ancestor was Robert.Irish and Scottish people added Mar or Mc or O.Perhaps all of the MacDonnells and the McDonnells and the O'Donnells are descendants of the same Donnell.生词brook n.小溪pave v. Some roads are paved with wooden blocks, some with slabs of stone. leafy adj. The children shouted, waving leafy branches above their heads. occupation n. For professional footballers, injuries are an occupational hazard. ancestor n.祖先:a ceremony of honoring one's ancestors祭祖仪式furniture n.家具:The master bedroom is filled with antique furniture. descendant n. Cristobal Colon is a direct descendant of Columbus.

1.Which of the following aspects do the surnames in the passage NOT cover?

A.Places where people lived.

D.People's occupations.

2.According to the passage, the ancestors of the Potter family most probably _____.

A.owned or drove a cart

B.made things with metals

C.made kitchen tools or containers

D.built houses and furniture

3.Suppose an English couple whose ancestors lived near a leafy forest wanted their new-born son to become a world leader, the baby might be named _____.

A.Beatrice Smith

B.Leonard Carter

C.George Longstreet

D.Donald Greenwood

4.The underlined word“descendants”in the last paragraph means a person's _____.

A.later generations

B.friends and relatives

C.colleagues and partners

It was an early September day, cool and bright and just right for running, and I was in the first few miles of a 10-mile race over a course with a few high hills.Still,I felt energetic;despite the hills it was going to be a fine run.

Just ahead of me was Peggy Mimno,a teacher from Mount Kisco,New York. She too was running easily, moving along at my speed. The pace felt comfortable,so I decided to stay where I was;why pay attention to pace when she was setting such a nice one?I'd overtake her later on when she was tired.

So I ran behind her.The course headed north for five miles, wandered west for a hilly mile, then turned south again along a winding road. The race was getting harder. We had four miles left and already it was beginning to be real work.

Peggy overtook a young runner. She seemed to know him,for they exchanged a few cheerful words as she passed him.Their exchange worried me.You don't chat during a race unless you are feeling good, and Peggy plainly was.

Still,I was close enough to overtake her if she was tired,so I didn't give up hope completely. We were getting nearer to a long, punishing hill now and it would be the test.We were a mile from the finish line,so whatever happened on the hill would almost certainly determine who crossed it first.

As I moved up the hill,my attention wandered for a few minutes. When I looked up,Peggy was moving away—first five yards, then ten, then more. Finally it was clear that there was no hope of catching her.She beat me soundly.

There is an important lesson in that race.Women are thought to be weaker, slower and not nearly as skilled in sports.Yet as Peggy Mimno so clearly showed, the similarities between men and women runners are more important than the differences.I have run with a number of women, and I can say that it is often hard work. A car overtook me although I was going very fast. wander v. He was found in a confused state, wandering the streets. wind v. 盘旋的,环绕的:a winding road through the hills弯弯曲曲穿过山冈的一条路plainly adv. Their conversation could be quite plainly heard by the neighbours. soundly adv. Our team was soundly beaten this afternoon.

A.It would be hard work.

A.Peggy overtook the young runner.

B.Peggy was running energetically.

C.Peggy was laughing at the writer.

3.By saying“a long,punishing hill”in Paragraph 5,the writer implies that _____.

A.Peggy would fail to reach the hilltop

B.men are more skilled at climbing hills

C.overtaking Peggy would be easy

D.climbing the hill would be a demanding task

4.What lesson does the writer learn from the race?

D.He should set a quicker pace at the beginning of a race.

Christopher Thomas,27,was a writer by night and a teacher by day when he noticed he was always tired and was losing weight fast.Diagnosed with diabetes,Thomas would need to inject himself with insulin(胰岛素)three times a day for the rest of his life or risk nerve damage, blindness, and even death. And if that weren't bad enough,he had no health insurance.

After a month of feeling upset,Thomas decided he'd better find a way to fight back.He left Canton,Michigan for New York, got a job waiting tables, nicknamed himself the Diabetic Rockstar, and created diabeticrockstar.com,a free online community for diabetics and their loved ones—a place where over 1,100 people share personal stories, information, and resources.

Jason Swencki's son,Kody, was diagnosed with diabetes at six.Father and son visit the online children's forums together most evenings.“Kody gets so excited, writing to kids from all over,”says Swencki, one of the site's volunteers.“They know what he's going through,so he doesn't feel alone.”

Kody is anything but alone:Diabetes is now the seventh leading cause of death in the United States, with 24 million diagnosed cases. And more people are being diagnosed at younger ages.

These days,Thomas's main focus is his charity,Fight It,which provides medicines and supplies to people—225 to date—who can't afford a diabetic's huge expenses.Fight-it.org has raised about $23,000—in products and in cash.In May,Thomas will hold the first annual Diabetic Rockstar Festival in the Caribbean.

Even with a staff of 22 volunteers,Thomas often devotes up to 50 hours a week to his cause, while still doing his full-time job waiting tables.“Of the diabetes charities out there, most are putting money into finding a cure,”says Bentley Cubar, one of Rockstar's original members.“But Christopher is the only person I know saying people need help now.”生词diabetes n.糖尿病inject v.注射:He was shown how to inject himself with insulin. Waiting table is a skilled job, requiring careful training. nickname v.给…… They nicknamed her“the Squirrel”. forum n. We hope that these pages will act as a forum for debate. The work was anything but easy. charity n. The Children's Society is a registered charity. annual adj.
