TEST FOR ENGLISH MAJORS (2003)-GRADE FOUR-TIME LIMIT: 140 MIN.

PART Ⅰ  WRITING [45 MIN]

SECTION A COMPOSITION [35 MIN]

People in modern society live under a lot of pressure, from education, career, or family. So it is important for them to keep a good mood under whatever circumstances.

Write on ANSWER SHEET ONE a composition of about 150 words on the following topic:THE IMPORTANCE OF KEEPING A GOOD MOOD

You are to write in three parts.

In the first part, state specifically what your view is.

In the second part, support your view with one or two reasons.

In the last part, bring what you have written to a natural conclusion or a summary.

Marks will be awarded for content, organization, grammar and appropriacy. Failure to follow the instructions may result in a loss of marks.【审题构思】“保持好心情的重要性”个话题陈述自己的观点,并且给出充分的依据,最后在以上议论的基础上证明自己的观点。行文上首先要通过现象引出话题,并明确表明自己的观点。第二部分论证自己的观点,要提供充分的依据,进行举例说明,注意语言要条理清楚,逻辑性强。也可从反面论证,说明消极心情对人的坏处。最后一部分再次点题,强调好心情对现代社会中的人们更加重要。【参考范文】The Importance of Keeping a Good Mood

Nowadays, people in modern society live under a lot of pressure①, from education, career, or family. We are easy to complain the school for charging too much, the family members for the heavy ②burdens, and the society for the fierce competitions. I believe it is ③essential to maintain a positive attitude towards life. It is important to keep a good mood under whatever circumstances.④

Facing the great pressure, people tend to confine themselves to ⑤their small rooms and work hard. This will undermine their health, and they fail to communicate with his co-workers and spend time with their family members. Instead, we should keep a good mood—we should keep communication with our co-workers and family members, and we should spare time to do some sports as well, like basketball, football or going to the cinema. We can work at a high efficiency after getting refreshed. On the other hand, failure is inevitable in our study and work. The feeling of frustration will do us no good. What will really ⑥do us good is to draw a lesson from the failure. We should keep a good mood and never give up. Just remember, “Failure is the mother of success.”

In a word, keeping a good mood is very important, especially for the modern men, so we should learn to relax during our fast-pace modern life.【范文点评】

首段首先引入现象,现代社会的人遭受各种压力,引出问题,并明确表明自己的观点:在任何环境下,保持一个好心情都是必要的。

第二段先从正反两方面论述了保持好心情的重要性,心态不好,身体状态就会下降,人际交往也会出问题,所以必须保持好心情,积极与人交流。然后指出工作或学习上的一时失败是不可避免的,要勇于面对,保持积极心态。

最后一段再次点题强调保持良好心境的重要性。【闪光词句】

①under a lot of pressure 承受巨大压力

②fierce competition 激烈的竞争

③maintain a positive attitude toward 保持积极的态度

④confine...to 把……困在……

⑤undermine one’s health 破坏某人的健康

⑥draw a lesson from... 从……中吸取教训

SECTION B  NOTE-WRITING [10 MIN]

Write on ANSWER SHEET ONE a note of about 50-60 words based on the following situation:

Your friend Clare has invited you to her house-warming party this weekend. However, you will be away then. Write her a note politely declining her invitation and expressing your best wishes to her.

Marks will be awarded for content, organization, grammar and appropriacy.【审题构思】

PART Ⅱ  DICTATION [15 MIN]

Listen to the following passage. Altogether the passage will be read to you four times: During the first reading, which will be read at normal speed, listen and try to understand the meaning. For the second and third readings, the passage will be read sentence by sentence, or phrase by phrase, with intervals of 15 seconds. The last reading will be read at normal speed again and during this time you should check your work. You will then be given 2 minutes to check through your work once more.

Please write the whole passage on ANSWER SHEET TWO.【参考答案】Salmon

①Every year, millions of salmon swim from the ocean into the mouths of rivers and then steadily up the rivers. ②Passing through waters, around rocks and waterfalls, the fish finally reach their original streams or lakes. ③They dig out nests in the riverbed and lay their eggs. ④Then, exhausted by their journey, the parent salmon die. ⑤They have finished the task that nature has given them. ⑥Months, or years later, the young fish start their trip to the ocean. ⑦They live in the salt water from two to seven years until they too are ready to swim back to reproduce. ⑧Their life cycle helps man provide himself with a basic food fish. ⑨When the adult salmon gather at the river mouths for the annual trip up the rivers, they are in the best possible condition, and nearly every harbor has its salmon fishing fleet ready to catch thousands for markets.【难点点评】(1)句①中,由“every year”可以判断,句子的时态是一般现在时,主语是“millions of salmon”,谓语动词应该用复数形式。(2)句②中,“fish”前面定冠词“the”不能删掉,表示特指;fish表示同一种鱼时,是单复数同型的名词,此处特指的是一类鱼,数量很多,谓语动词不能用第三人称单数。(3)句④中,“exhausted by their journey”在句中充当原因状语,由于“exhaust”与“parent salmon”是动宾关系,故用“exhausted”的形式,注意与“exhausting”区分。(4)句⑦中,注意区分too和to。“until they too...”中的“too”表示“也”,而“to swim”中的“to”是不定式的构成成分,无意义。(5)句⑨中,“mouths”容易误听成“mouth”。
