D. Because of【答案与解析】

而A项because引导原因状语从句;unless和if引导条件状语从句。

but表转折;so表因果;or表选择。

故familiar(熟悉的)符合题意。

decide to do sth. agree to do同意做某事。happen to do碰巧……。

at times有时。

36.A  表示“当……

37.C  该句的谓语have come to see表示变化过程,所以用gradually表示“渐渐地”。

because of因为。according to根据。in relation to关于,有关,涉及。in addition to除此之外,而且。

Ⅳ. Translation from English into Chinese

Equal are the generous gifts granted by Nature to all human individuals, be they wealthy or impoverished. Therefore, all human individuals have become unanimously and profoundly indebted to Nature. This is particularly true in rural areas where ways of life have remained intact and unchanged for people for thousands of years—sowing crops and grapes, brewing and drinking wines, grazing and milking cows, hoeing grasses and planting flower-trees, going to churches for religious prayers and services on weekends, playing musical instruments, dancing and singing on squares. The fields in former times are still their present-day homes glowing with human warmth. In such a way, each locality has evolved its own unique folk tales and has transmitted its distinctive habits and customs.【参考译文】

Ⅴ. Reading Comprehension(每小题2分,共30分)

Passage One

A recent study, published in last week’s Journal of the American Medical Association, offers a picture of how risky it is to get a lift from a teenage driver. Indeed, a 16-year-old driver with three or more passengers is three times as likely to have a fatal accident as a teenager driving alone. By contrast, the risk of death for drivers between 30 and 59 decreases with each additional passenger.

The authors also found that the death rates for teenage drivers increased dramatically after 10 p.m., and especially after midnight, with passengers in the car, the driver was even more likely to die in a late-night accident.

Robert Foss, a scientist at the University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center, says the higher death rates for teenage drivers have less to do with "really stupid behavior" than with a lack of driving experience. “The basic issue,” He says, “is that adults who are-responsible for issuing licenses fail to recognize how complex and skilled a task driving is.”

Both he and the author of the study believe that the way to mitigate(使……缓解)the problem is to have states institute so-called graduated licensing systems, in which getting a license is a multistage process. A graduated license requires that a teenager first, prove himself capable of driving in the presence of an adult, followed by a period of driving with night of passenger restrictions, before graduating to full driving privileges.

Graduated licensing systems have reduced teenage driver crashes, according to recent studies. About half of the states now have some sort of graduated licensing system in place, but only 10 of those states have restrictions on passengers, California is the strictest, with a novice(新手)driver prohibited from carrying any passenger under 20 (without the presence of an adult over 25) for the first six months.

46. Which of the following situations is most dangerous according to the passage?

A) Adults giving a lift to teenagers on the highway after 10 p.m.

B) A teenager driving after midnight with passengers in the car.

C) Adults driving with three or more teenage passengers late at night.

D) A teenager getting a lift from a stranger on the highway at midnight.

47. According to Robert Foss, the high death rate of teenage drivers is mainly due to _____.

A) their frequent driving at night

B) their improper way of driving

C) their lack of driving experience

D) their driving with passengers

48. According to Paragraph 3, which of the following statement is TRUE?

A) Teenagers should spend more time learning to drive.

B) Driving is a skill too complicated for teenagers to learn.

C) Restrictions should be imposed on teenagers applying to take driving lessons.

D) The licensing authorities are partly responsible for teenagers’ driving accidents.

49. A suggested measure to be taken to reduce teenagers, driving accidents is that _____.

A) driving in the presence of an adult should be made a rule

B) they should be prohibited from taking on passengers

C) they should not be allowed to drive after 10 p.m.

D) the licensing system should be improved

50. The present situation in about half of the states is that the graduated licensing system _____.

A) is under discussion

B) is about to be set up

C) has been put into effect

D) has been perfected【

46.B  从文中第一段 “A recent study…offers a picture of how risky it is to get a lift from a teenage driver” 以及第二段中 “the death rates for teenage drivers increased dramatically after 10 p.m., and especially after midnight, With passengers in the car, the driver was even more likely to die in a late-night accident” 可知在夜间搭乘未成年人的车是很危险的。

47.C  文章第三段提到 “the higher death rates for teenage drivers have less to do with ‘really stupid behavior’ than with just a lack of driving experience” 意即“未成年驾驶者的高死亡率更多的应归咎于缺乏驾驶经验而不是愚蠢的行为”。

48.D  第三段中指出,“The basic issue…is that adults who are responsible for issuing licenses fail to recognize how complex and skilled a task driving is.”

49.D  文中第四段提到,“Both he and the author of the study believe that the way to mitigate the problem is to have states institute so-called graduated licensing systems,in which getting a license is a multistage process”,由此可知解决此问题的办法在于建立渐进式发证系统,获得驾驶执照须经多个阶段。

50.C  根据最后一段 “About half of the states now have some sort of graduated licensing system in place” 即这种发证系统已经在过半数以上的州得以实施。

Passage Two

About six years ago I was eating lunch in a restaurant in New York City when and a young boy sat down the next table, I couldn’t help overhearing parts of their conversation. At one point the woman asked: “So, how have you been?” And the boy—who could not have been more than seven or eight years old—replied. “Frankly, I’ve been feeling a little depressed lately.”

This incident stuck in my mind because it confirmed my growing belief that children are changing. As far as I can remember, my friends and I didn’t find out we were “depressed” until we were in high school.

The evidence of a change in Children has increased steadily in recent years. Children don’t seem childlike anymore. Children speak more like adults, dress more like adults and behave more like adults than they used to.

Whether this is good or bad is difficult to say, but it certainly is different. Childhood as it once was no longer exists. Why?

Human development is based not only on innate biological stales, but also on patterns of access to social knowledge. Movement from one social role to another usually involves learning the secrets of the new status. Children have always been taught adult secrets, but slowly and in stages: traditionally, we tell sixth graders things we keep hidden from filth graders.

In the last 30 years, however, a secret-revelation machine has been installed in 98 percent of American homes. It is called television. Television passes information, and indiscriminately to all viewers alike, be they children or adults. Unable to resist the temptation, many children turn their attention from printed texts to the less challenging, more vivid moving pictures.

Communication through print, as a matter of fact, allows for a great deal of control over the social information to which children have access. Reading and writing involve a complex code of symbols that must be memorized and practices. Children must read simple books before they can read complex materials.

51. According to the author, feeling depressed is _____.

A) a sure sign of a psychological problem in a child

B) something hardly to be expected in a young child

C) an inevitable has of children’s mental development

D) a mental scale present in all humans, including children

52. Traditionally, a child is supposed to learn about the adult world _____.

A) through contact with society

B) gradually and under guidance

C) naturally and by biological instinct

D) through exposure to social information

53. The phenomenon that today’s children seem adult like is attributed by the author to _____.

A) the widespread influence of television

B) the poor arrangement of teaching content

C) the fast pace of human intellectual development

D) the constantly rising standard of living

54. Why is the author in favor of communication through print for children?

A) It enables children to gain more social information.

B) It develops children’s interest in reading and writing.

C) It helps children to memorize and practice more.

D) It can control what children are to learn.

55. What does the author think of the change in today’s children?

A) He feels amused by chair premature behavior.

B) He thinks it is a phenomenon worthy of note.

C) He considers it a positive development.

D) He seems to be upset about it.【答案与解析】

51.B  由题干feeling depressed定位至文章第二段,作者说到“my friends and I didn’t find out we were “depressed” until we were in high school”,即“我和我的朋友们直到高中才开始感觉沮丧”,言下之意就是小孩子是不会出现沮丧心理的。

52.B  本题讨论孩子学习社会知识的途径,本文第五段提到,“Children have always been taught adult secrets, but slowly and in stages”其中be taught in stages(按阶段,循序渐进)对应选项B中的under guidance与gradually。

54.D  作者在最后一段主张孩子们应该通过印刷媒介交流信息,“Communication through print, as a matter of fact, allows for a great deal of control over the social information to which children have access.”

55.D  第四段中作者提出:“Whether this is good or bad is difficult to say”似乎对儿童的变化是好是坏没有做出评判,而最后一句话又说“Children must read simple books before they can read complex materials”由此可见作者的态度是为这种现象感到忧虑。

Passage Three

Dogs are social animals and without proper training, they will behave like wild animals. They will soil your house, destroy your belongings, bark excessively, fight other dogs and even bite you. Nearly all behavior problems are perfectly normal dog activities that occur at the wrong time or place or are directed at the wrong thing. The key to preventing or treating behavior problems is learning to teach the dog to redirect its normal behavior to outlets that are acceptable in the domestic setting.

One of the best things you can do for your dog and yourself is to obedience train it. Obedience training doesn’t solve all behavior problems, but it is the foundation for solving just about any problem.
