PROLOGUE
In the warm tropical waters off the coast of Australia, two clownfish swam at the edge of the Great Barrier Reef. Here the ocean was a place of brightly colored anemones, towering corals, and delicate sea plants. But just beyond the reef was the vast open sea.
“Yes, honey. It’s beautiful,” a clownfish named Coral said nervously to her husband, Marlin. “When you said you wanted an ocean view, you didn’t think you were gonna get the whole ocean, did you?” “Oh, yeah. A fish can breathe out here,” Marlin boasted.
He grinned. The edge of the Great Barrier Reef! He couldn’t think of a better spot to make their new home.
“I know that the Drop-off is desirable, with the great schools and the amazing view and all that. But do we really need so much space?” Although Coral loved her new anemone home, she was a bit cautious about the location near the open sea, with its unpredictable dangers.
“Coral, honey. Our kids deserve the best,” Marlin said. “They’ll wake up, poke their little heads out of the window, and they’ll see a whale passing right by.”
“Shhh! You’re gonna wake the kids,” Coral whispered. They gazed inside the cozy cave just below the anemone, where hundreds of tiny fish eggs nestled close together—Marlin and Coral’s children.
Marlin couldn’t wait for their babies to hatch. He wanted to show his children all the sights of the glorious ocean.
“We still have to name them,” Coral said. Marlin puffed up with pride and drew an imaginary line down the center of the group of eggs with his fin. “We’ll name this half Marlin junior and this half Marlene.”
“I like Nemo,” Coral said.
“Nemo?” Marlin repeated. “Well, we’ll name one Nemo.”
Coral looked over at Marlin wistfully. “Just think,” she said. “In a couple of days we’re going to be parents.”
“What if they don’t like me?” Marlin said.
“There’s over four hundred eggs. Odds are one of them is bound to like you,” Coral teased.
Marlin stared at her and shyly asked: “You remember how we met?”
“Well, I try not to,” Coral replied.
Marlin playfully chased his wife in and out of the anemone. “I remember.” he said. “ ‘Excuse me, miss. Could you check and see if I have a hook in my lip? Oh, you gotta look closer.’ ”
Coral laughed and swam out of the anemone to avoid getting caught by her husband. Marlin poked his head out of the anemone and was startled to find that the neighborhood was eerily quiet. He spotted Coral, who was motionless, staring into the water at a hungry barracuda.
“Get inside the house, Coral,” he whispered. But Coral didn’t want to leave her babies exposed. She darted for the grotto, but was too slow—the barracuda reached her as she entered the cave.
Marlin slammed against the barracuda, trying desperately to save his wife. But with a quick swish of its tail, the barracuda batted Marlin against some rocks. Dazed, Marlin floated down into the protective fronds of an anemone.
After the sand had settled, Marlin came to with a start and bolted out of the anemone.
“Coral?” he called.
There was no answer. He peered inside the grotto. Empty. He squinted into the vast blue water.
Nothing.
Coral was gone. The eggs were gone.
Marlin couldn’t believe this was happening! In the space of a few minutes, his life had been changed forever. His family was gone. He shook his head. He felt like it was his fault. He shouldn’t have insisted they live by the Drop-off. As he sadly turned away, he noticed something out of the corner of his eye.
Lying on a small ledge not far away was one tiny egg. It was damaged with a small scratch. But the egg was alive. Alive!
Marlin cradled the egg in his fin. “There, there. Daddy’s here. And I promise, I will never let anything happen to you . . .” He paused a moment, then called the egg by name.
“Nemo.”序 幕

马林调皮地追着自己的妻子，在海葵里钻进钻出。“我记得。”他说道，“‘打搅了，小姐。你能帮我看看我嘴唇上是不是有个鱼钩吗？哦，你得靠近一点’。”
珊珊大笑起来，钻出了海葵，免得被丈夫抓住。马林把脑袋探出海葵，吃惊地发现周围安静得让人害怕。他看到珊珊一动不动地注视着这片水域里一条饥肠辘辘的梭鱼。“快进屋，珊珊。”他悄悄地说。但是珊珊不想暴露她的宝宝们。她飞速向岩洞冲去，但是太慢了——她进洞时被梭鱼抓住了。
马林狠狠地撞击梭鱼，想不顾一切地拯救自己的妻子。但是，梭鱼用尾巴迅速一甩，就把马林摔到了礁石上。马林晕晕乎乎地往下漂，一直漂到海葵的保护触手里。
等沙子沉淀下来，马林才猛然苏醒，急匆匆地冲出海葵。“珊珊?”他大叫道。
无人应答。他往岩洞里面张望，空空的。他眯起眼睛注视着这片浩瀚的蓝色海水。
什么也没有。
珊珊不见了。鱼卵不见了。
马林无法相信刚刚发生的这一切！不过短短的几分钟，他的生活就永远地改变了。他的家没了。他摇了摇头。他觉得这都是他的错。他原本就不该坚持住在峭壁。正当他伤心地转身离开时，眼角的余光瞟到了某个东西。
不远处有个小小的暗礁，上面躺着一颗小小的鱼卵。鱼卵上有条小小的划痕。但是鱼卵还活着。还活着！
马林用他的鳍轻轻地捧起这颗鱼卵。“好了，好了。爸爸在这儿。我保证，不会让你再出任何意外了……”他停顿了一会儿，然后开始呼唤这颗鱼卵的名字。“尼莫。”CHAPTER 1
Deep in the ocean, the morning sun’s rays shone through the water. Inside an anemone, an excited young clownfish jumped awake. “First day of school!” he shouted to his father. “Wake up! Come on!” “I don’t want to go to school,” Marlin muttered.
“Not you, Dad. Me!” Nemo cried. “Huh?” Marlin shook himself awake.
“All right, I’m up. It’s time for school.”
“It’s time for school!” Nemo repeated in a singsong voice. He’d never been to school before. He was excited about exploring the ocean with his class. Visiting different places. Trying different things!
He’d never been far from his anemone home—and he couldn’t wait to see more of the ocean.
Nemo somersaulted and accidentally crashed out of the anemone. Before he knew it, he was stuck headfirst in some coral.
“Nemo!” Marlin shouted, fully awake. He raced outside.
“First day of school! First day of school!” Nemo sang in a muffled voice.
Quickly, Marlin pulled him from the coral, then tugged him inside their home.
“All right, where’s the break?” he asked Nemo in an anxious voice. “Are you woozy? How many stripes do I have?”
“I’m fine.” Nemo knew his dad was worried. He always worried.
“Answer the stripe question!” Marlin demanded.
“Three,” Nemo replied.
Marlin sighed, relieved. “How’s the lucky fin?”
Nemo glanced down at his fin. It was withered, a little misshapen from his encounter with the barracuda when he was still an egg. “Lucky.”
“Now, are you sure you want to go to school this year?” Marlin asked. “You can wait five or six years.”
No way, Nemo thought. “Dad, it’s time for school!” he repeated.
Marlin looked around. What could keep Nemo home, safe and sound, if only for a few more minutes? “Aha!” he cried. “You forgot to brush!”
Brushing was very important, Nemo knew. Clownfish lived in anemone homes because the anemones’ fronds were poisonous and protected the little fish from predators. Brushing up against the anemone stingers, a little bit every day, made the clownfish immune to the poison.
Nemo backed up into a tendril and brushed against it. “Okay, I’m done!” he said quickly.
“You missed a spot,” said Marlin. “Where?” Nemo asked.
“There!” Marlin tickled Nemo under a fin. “And right there.” He tickled Nemo under his other fin.
Nemo giggled, and together they swam out the door.
“Dad, maybe while I’m at school I’ll see a shark!” Nemo said excitedly. Then he asked, “How old are sea turtles?”
“I—I don’t know,” Marlin admitted. “Sandy Plankton, from next door, said that sea turtles live to be about a hundred years old!” Nemo cried.
“Well, if I ever meet a sea turtle, I’ll ask him,” Marlin said.
Father and son were approaching the schoolyard now.
Two young fish tossed a shell back and forth, playing catch. “Come on, you guys! Stop it! Give that back!” A hermit crab shouted at them.
“I wonder where we’re supposed to go,” Marlin said, looking around. He spotted a group of fathers. “Come on. We’ll try over here.”
“Excuse me,” Marlin said, approaching the other dads. “Is this where we meet his teacher?”
The other fish looked at him, surprised. “Well,” the sea horse said, “look who’s out of the anemone!” Then he turned toward a group of children playing in the nearby sand. “Sheldon!” the father called to his son. “Get out of Mr. Johannsen’s yard. Now!”
The giant flounder that the small fish were playing on suddenly sprang from his resting place in the sand. The children scattered, chasing each other, playing tag.
“Dad!” Nemo whispered. “Can I go play, too?”
“I would feel better if you’d play on the sponge beds,” Marlin replied.
Nemo glanced at the soft, springy sponge beds. Little newborn fish jumped on them, their mothers watching carefully. He wasn’t going over there—that was for babies!
Just then some children raced up. They were about Nemo’s age. They looked at him curiously.
“What’s wrong with his fin?” asked a pink octopus named Pearl.
“He looks funny,” said Tad, a butterfly fish. “Be nice,” Tad’s dad warned. “It’s his first time at school.”
“See this tentacle?” Pearl asked Nemo. “It’s actually shorter than all my other tentacles, but you can’t really tell.”
“I’m H2O intolerant,” said Sheldon.
“Achoo!”
“I’m obnoxious,” said Tad.
Just then a big blue manta ray swam up to the reef. “Mr. Ray!” shouted the children, rushing over to the teacher.
“Come aboard, explorers,” said Mr. Ray. The children lined up in front of their teacher. Nemo joined them, with Marlin right by his side.
Nemo turned red. “Dad, you can go now,” he whispered. But Marlin stayed right where he was.
One by one, the children climbed aboard Mr. Ray.
“Well, hello,” Mr. Ray said when Nemo reached him. “Who is this?”
“I’m Nemo.”
“Well, Nemo, all new explorers must answer a science question,” Mr. Ray said. “You live in what kind of home?”
“In an anemon-ene... amanemone...ammeneme...anemone,” Nemo said, struggling to say the word.
“Okay, okay, don’t hurt yourself,” Mr. Ray said. “Welcome aboard, explorer!”
“Just so you know,” Marlin added quietly, “he’s got a little fin. I find if he’s having trouble swimming, I let him take a break— ten, fifteen minutes—”
“Dad,” Nemo said, annoyed, “it’s time for you to go now!”
“Don’t worry,” Mr. Ray told Marlin. “We’re gonna stay together as a group.”
“Bye, Dad!” Nemo shouted as Mr. Ray swam away with the students.
“Bye, son!” Marlin called. “Be safe,” he said to himself.
Sheldon’s dad turned to Marlin. “Hey, you’re doing pretty well for a first-timer.”
“Well, you can’t hold on to them forever, can you?” Marlin replied.
“Yeah, I had a tough time when my oldest went out on the Drop-off,” Tad’s dad said.
“The Drop-off?” Marlin shouted. “Why don’t we just fry them up now and serve them with chips?”
Without any hesitation, he raced after Nemo.第 1 章

马林飞快地把他从珊瑚里拉出来，然后把他拖回家。“好吧，哪里受伤了?”他急切地询问尼莫，“你头晕吗？我身上有几道条纹?”“我很好。”尼莫知道爸爸很担心。他总是焦虑不安。“快回答条纹这个问题!”马林要求道。“三道。”尼莫回答。
马林如释重负地叹了口气。“你的幸运鳍怎么样?”
尼莫往下瞥了一眼他的鱼鳍。它萎缩了，这点残缺是尼莫还是鱼卵的时候遭遇梭鱼造成的。“幸运着呢。”“那么，你确定今年要去上学吗?”马林问，“再等个五六年也可以。”
没门儿，尼莫想。“老爸，该去上学了!”他又重复了一遍。
马林四下张望着。怎么样才能让尼莫安然无恙地待在家里呢？哪怕多待几分钟都行。“啊哈!”他叫了出来，“你忘了擦防护油!”
尼莫知道擦防护油很重要。小丑鱼住在海葵屋里，因为海葵的触手有毒，能够保护小鱼不被捕食。小丑鱼如果每天擦一点儿海葵毒刺的防护液，就可以对毒素产生免疫力。
尼莫往后退，钻进一根触手，擦了防护液。“好了，我擦好啦!”他马上说。“有个地方没擦到。”马林说。“哪儿?”尼莫问道。“那儿!”马林咯吱着尼莫的鱼鳍。“还有那儿。”又咯吱尼莫的另一只鱼鳍。
尼莫咯咯地笑着，他们一起游出了家门。“老爸，我在学校的时候，可能会看到鲨鱼!”尼莫兴奋地说道。然后他问：“海龟能活多少岁?”“我——我不知道。”马林承认。“隔壁的山迪叔叔说，海龟差不多可以活到一百岁!”尼莫大喊。“好吧，要是碰到海龟，我就问问他。”马林说。
父子俩此刻快游到校园了。
两条小鱼一来一回地扔着贝壳，练习投球，“拜托，你们这些家伙！快停下！把东西还给我!”一只寄生蟹冲他们大喊。“不知道我们该往哪里走。”马林一边说，一边东张西望。他看到一群父亲。“快点儿。我们来这儿。”“打扰一下，”马林靠近其他爸爸，说道，“这是我们会见老师的地方吗?”
其他鱼吃惊地看着他。“哟，”海马说，“看看是谁从海葵屋里出来了!”然后，他转向在附近沙子里玩耍的一群孩子。“希顿!”这位父亲呼喊着自己的儿子，“从约翰森先生的院子里出来。马上!”
小鱼们本来在巨大的比目鱼身上玩耍，不料比目鱼突然从休息的沙地上跳了起来。孩子们四下散开，追来追去地玩捉迷藏。“老爸!”尼莫低声叫着，“我也可以去玩吗?”“如果你在那些海绵垫子上玩的话，我会比较安心。”马林回答。
尼莫瞅了瞅柔软而有弹性的海绵垫子。刚出生的小鱼宝宝在上面跳来跳去，那些妈妈们小心翼翼地看护着。他绝不会去那儿——那是鱼宝宝玩的!
就在这时，冲过来一群孩子。他们跟尼莫年纪相仿。他们好奇地盯着他。“他的鳍怎么了?”一只名叫珍珠的粉红色章鱼问道。“他看上去很好笑。”蝶鱼泰迪说。“要有礼貌，”泰迪的爸爸提醒他，“他是第一次来上学。”“看见这只触角了吗?”珍珠问尼莫，“其实它比我其他的触角都短，但是你几乎看不出来。”“我对海水过敏。”希顿说。“阿嚏!”“我惹人厌。”泰迪说。
就在这时，一条大大的蓝色魔鬼鱼游到礁石上。“雷老师!”孩子们大声喊着，纷纷冲到老师身边。“上船了，探险家们。”雷老师说。孩子们在老师面前排起了队。尼莫也站在队伍里，马林就站在他旁边。
尼莫的脸都红了。“老爸，你现在可以走了。”他小声说。但是马林站在原地一动不动。
孩子们一个接一个地爬到雷老师身上。“嗯，你好，”尼莫走到他跟前时，雷老师说道，“你是谁?”“我是尼莫。”“好吧，尼莫，新来的探险家都得回答一个科学问题，”雷老师说，“你住在什么样的房子里?”“在海……海……葵……葵……里。”尼莫很费劲儿地说出这个词。“好了，好了，别难为自己了，”雷老师说，“欢迎登船，探险家!”“想让您知道一下，”马林轻声说道，“他有只鳍很小。如果发现他游不动了，我会让他休息一会儿——十，十五分钟——”“老爸，”尼莫恼火地说，“你该走了!”“别担心，”雷老师告诉马林，“我们会集体行动。”“再见，老爸!”雷老师和学生们一起游走时，尼莫大声喊着。“再见，儿子!”马林喊着。“注意安全。”他自言自语道。
希顿的老爸转向马林。“嘿，作为第一次送孩子上学的父母，你做得很不错。”“嗯，你不可能守着他们一辈子，是吧?”马林回答。“是啊，我家老大去峭壁时，我总是不放心。”泰迪的老爸说。“峭壁?”马林大声叫道，“干吗现在不把他们油炸了，跟薯条一起端上桌呢?”
他毫不犹豫地去追尼莫。Chapter 2
A few minutes later, Mr. Ray and the children arrived at the Drop-off.
“All right, kids,” said Mr. Ray. “Feel free to explore. But stay close.” The class gathered around Mr. Ray as he began his science lesson.
Tad turned to Pearl and Sheldon. “Come on,” he whispered. “Let’s go.”
The three friends sneaked away from the group.
“Hey, guys. Wait up,” said Nemo. He raced after them. But once he realized where he was, he stopped short. He was at the edge of the reef. The ocean spread out before him. It was so big, so wide, and so blue—it was like nothing he’d ever seen.
“Whoa!” he exclaimed.
“Cool!” said Sheldon, Pearl, and Tad at the same time.
Tad pushed Pearl toward the edge. “Aaah!” she cried. Then he yanked her back.
The small octopus looked down. She was covered in black liquid. “Aw, you guys! You made me ink!”
Nemo felt dizzy with excitement. He was playing with friends! Seeing the ocean! It was all so new.
“What’s that?” Nemo pointed a fin at a dive boat floating on the surface.
“I know what it is,” said Tad. “Sandy Plankton saw one. He said it was called a butt.”
“Wow!” exclaimed Pearl. “That’s a pretty big butt.”
“Ooh-ooh, look at me,” Sheldon said, starting to swim out into the open water. “I’m going to go touch the butt! Aaaachoo!” He sneezed, and the force of his sneeze moved him a bit closer to the boat.
“Aaah!” Sheldon screamed. He raced back to his friends.
The others laughed. “Well, let’s see you get closer,” Sheldon dared them.
Pearl jumped out, just a little past where Sheldon had been. Then she hurried back. “Beat that!”
Next Tad swam out even farther than Pearl. “Come on, Nemo!” he said. “How far can you go?”
“Oh... um,” Nemo stammered. “My dad says it’s not safe.”
Suddenly, Marlin swam up next to Nemo. He pulled Nemo away from his new friends. Nervous and angry, Marlin scolded Nemo. “You were about to swim into open water!”
“No,” Nemo said. “I wasn’t going to go out—”
“It’s just a good thing I was here,” Marlin interrupted. “If I hadn’t shown up—”
“But, Dad, no—” Nemo started to say. The other children gathered around them. “Sir, he wasn’t going to go,” said Pearl. “Yeah,” said Tad. “He was too afraid.” “No, I wasn’t!” Nemo said defensively. “This does not concern you, kids,” Marlin said to Nemo’s friends. “And you’re lucky I don’t tell your parents you were out there!” Then he turned to Nemo. “You know you can’t swim well.”
“I can swim fine, Dad, okay?” Nemo cried. “No, it’s not okay. You shouldn’t be anywhere near here,” Marlin said. “I was right. You know what? We’ll start school in a year or two.”
“No, Dad! Just because you’re scared of the ocean—”
“Clearly you’re not ready, and you’re not coming back here till you are,” Marlin said. “You think you can do these things, but you just can’t, Nemo!”
“I hate you,” Nemo whispered under his breath. His dad had embarrassed him in front of everyone. Nemo would show them he wasn’t scared of the ocean like his dad.
“Excuse me.” Mr. Ray swam up to Marlin, shooing the children away. “Is there anything I can do?”
“You know, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to interrupt things. He isn’t a good swimmer, and I just think it’s a little too soon for him to be out here unsupervised,” Marlin explained.
“Well, I can assure you, he’s quite safe with me—” Mr. Ray started to say.
Marlin shook his head, interrupting the teacher. “Look, I’m sure he is, but you have a large class. He can get lost, you know, from sight if you’re not looking. Now, I’m not saying you’re not looking. You’re looking . . .” As the grown-ups kept talking, one little fish gasped. “Oh my gosh! Nemo’s swimming out to sea!”
“Nemo!” Marlin shouted. “What do you think you’re doing? You’re gonna get stuck out there, and I’m gonna have to get you before another fish does! Get back here! I said get back here, now! Stop! You take one more move, mister—”
Nemo ignored his father. I’m getting closer, he thought. Closer. There! He slapped the side of the dive boat with his fin.
“He touched the butt!” Tad said in amazement.
“You just paddle your little tail right back here, Nemo!” Marlin yelled. “That’s right. You are in big trouble, young man. Do you hear me?Big—”
Marlin froze, unable to speak. But now everyone else was shouting for Nemo to swim back quickly.
Nemo realized everyone was looking behind him. What was going on? He spun around to look. All he could see was his own reflection in a giant diver’s mask....第 2 章

三个好朋友从队伍里溜走了。“嗨，伙计们，等一下。”尼莫说。他在后面追赶他们。但是，一旦他意识到自己到了什么地方，他突然停了下来。他来到了大堡礁的边缘。大海就展现在他面前。大海那么大，那么宽阔，那么湛蓝——和他以前看到的完全不一样。“哇!”他惊叫起来。“太棒了!”希顿、珍珠和泰迪异口同声地说。
泰迪把珍珠往边上推。“啊!”她大叫。接着他使劲把她拽回来。
小章鱼往下看了看。她身上都是墨汁。“呀，你们这些家伙！你们都害我吐了!”
尼莫兴奋得都晕了。和朋友们一起玩！看大海！这一切都那么新鲜。“那是什么?”尼莫用一只鱼鳍指着海面上漂浮着的一艘潜水船问道。“我知道那是什么，”泰迪说，“山迪叔叔看到过一个。他说，那叫屁屁。”“哇!”珍珠大叫，“那屁屁可真大。”“哦，看我的，”希顿说着，准备向那片开放的水域游去。“我要去摸摸那个屁屁！阿……阿……嚏!”他打了个喷嚏，打喷嚏使的力气使他离船更近了一些。“啊!”希顿尖叫着。他快速游回到朋友身边。
其他人大笑。“好了，看你们的了。”希顿向他们发出挑战。
珍珠跳出来，比希顿游得更远一点。然后，她赶紧回来了，说道：“超过你了!”
接着，泰迪又比珍珠游得更远。“来吧，尼莫!”他说，“你能游多远?”
