I am a computer expert. I have been in the field for only a short time. I never learned much in the way of science or math. And I am quite puzzled by things like engineering or electronics.

Then why am I able to write about computers? I can write on this subject because of these shortcomings. The last two years of learning has been a hard test for me. By hard work I have managed to learn enough to use computers fairly well, and to work with people who know a great deal more than I. Since I have learned all this at such personal cost, I would like to share my know-ledge with others. More and more people want to know about computers, and want to know quickly.

The best way to learn is to take a course. However, many people do not have the time for this. They will have to find some other ways to get some basic information. I hope to be able to help them by writing about some of the things I have learned by myself.

I have a home computer on which I've learned in my own time. I have used it like a home study course. I have sat down with it day after day, night after night. I have forced it to give up some of its secrets. Now I can use it to do some of the work that I get paid for. And I can do this work in my own home, instead of in an office. Many people may soon be working in a computer at home, just as many now take in other people's typing.

Some things about computers are easier than you may fear. First, computers are logical. Things that at first seem difficult will make sense to you after you learn the rules. Second, it is really not hard to learn enough to use today's machines. You do not need to be a great brain. But you do have to learn to think in new ways. And you do have to keep a good bit of information in your head. Finally, there are many people around who are really enthusiastic (热心的) about computers. These people are always happy to be of help.33. The purpose of the passage is to convince readers that, by studying computers at home, people can become ____.

[A]computer experts

[B]writers about computers

[C]computer scientists

[D]skilled users of computers34. You can conclude that the author thinks that if a person took a computer course, that person would learn ____.

[A]very quickly

[B]as much as the author's co-workers

[C]to think like a computer

[D]about computers the easy way35. According to the passage, a computer can be used to help you ____.

[A]take special courses in science

[B]take in other people's typing

[C]get other people's secrets

[D]do your work at home36. According to the passage, a home computer can best be described as ____.

[A]puzzling

[B]secret

[C]logical

[D]difficultB

To tell you the truth, I'm not interested in owing a cellular phone (便携式电话) except for use in an emergency (紧急情况), for ordinary cellular phone service is very expensive. How would I get help if I were in trouble or in danger? A good friend told me a product she thought would settle my problem. It's the SOS phone—a cellular phone service designed for emergency use.

With the touch of a button the SOS phone will connect me to a roadside emergency service, a 911 service or a trained service SOS operator, 24 hours a day. If I ever need help, I know it's just a phone call.

By pressing the "Tow" button, I'll be connected with my emergency roadside service provider (提供者), or if I don't have one, the SOS operator can suggest one to me and get in touch with them immediately.

The "911" button will connect me to 911 emergency service in my area—best of all, the call is completely free!

If I just want to call home to tell my husband and children something necessary, I can press the "Call" button. Then I'll reach an operator. When I asked the operator to call home, I'll be connected automatically (自动地). And because the Call Center has my 10 mostused phone numbers, I don't even have to recite the number.

Unlike ordinary cellular phone plans, the SOS phone doesn't have any minimum usage requirements (最低底价) or other promises that could change the price I expect to pay each month.

Why not try it yourself?37. The writer enjoys using the SOS phone because ____.

[A]she is always in trouble or in danger

[B]she thinks the cost of its service is reasonable

[C]she needn't pay for any emergency service

[D]the ordinary cellular phone cannot be used in an emergency38. When you have a SOS phone, ____.

[A]you will get help whenever you are in an emergency

[B]you will be safe whenever you are

[C]you can be connected with anyone

[D]you can get service from any cellular phones39. Press ________ button, and you can get service without paying for it.

[A]911

[B]Tow

[C]Call

[D]Tow and 91140. When you want to call home, ____.

[A]you will have to tell the operator your home phone number

[B]the operator will suggest one phone number to you

[C]the Call Center will pass on your words to your family

[D]you'll be connected with your family with the help of an operator第四部分 写 作

There are several explanations for why the circle is divided into 360 parts. Probably the best explanation is connected with the Babylonians (巴比伦人).

Many, many centuries ago, large distances were measured in the Babylonian mile. The Babylonian mile equaled about seven of our miles. Because of its length, the time needed to travel the Babylonian mile became a measure of time. One day was said to be twelve Babylonian time-miles.

About one thousand years before Christ, the Babylonians began keeping records of star movements. They needed a way to record how much time passed between the moment they first saw a star and then observed it again. They used the Babylonian time-mile as their measure of time.

In order to have small units of time, the Babylonians divided their time-mile into thirty parts. The Babylonians believed that each trip around the sky was a circle. One complete trip around the sky, they reasoned, took one day.

You already know that one day was the same as twelve Babylonian time-mile. Since each time-mile was divided into thirty parts, the circular trip around the sky was 12×30, or 360 parts long. That is how there came to be 360 degrees in a circle.32. The purpose of this passage is to explain ____.

[A]how the Babylonians measured the time of star movements

[B]why the circle is divided into 360 degrees

[C]the Babylonian mile and the Babylonian time-mile

[D]the Babylonians' ideas about the sky33. The Babylonian mile was first used to measure ____.

[A]star movements

[B]circles

[C]distances

[D]time34. We conclude that one Babylonian time-mile equals ____.

[A]two hours

[B]about seven miles

[C]one day

[D]twelve degrees35. For what was the Babylonian time-mile divided into thirty parts?

[A]To make a day into 360 parts.

[B]To make a circle into 360 parts.

[C]To measure more exact distances.

[D]To measure more exact time.B

Today's trumpet (小号) is one of the world's oldest instruments. It is the result of many centuries of development. Although it looks nothing like its ancestors, there are many similarities. All trumpets are hollow tubes. They are all blown. And they all use the player's lips to produce the basic sound.

The trumpet developed as players and makers worked to improve its design, size, shape, material and method of construction. They wanted to create an instrument that would produce a beautiful and attractive tone, enable the performer to play all the notes of the scale, extend the range higher and lower, make it possible to play more difficult music, and in general, be easier to play well. The remarkable way in which the modern trumpet achieves these goals is a measure of the success of all those who struggled to perfect this glorious instrument.

The trumpet is actually the leading member of an entire family of related instruments. There are trumpets of several different sizes, and in several different keys.

The trumpet is a link to many different periods of history and to people of many cultures. From the use of trumpets in ancient religious ceremonies to the part they play in modern rock bands, the trumpet family of instruments has much to tell about civilization and its development.36. It can be inferred from the passage that _____ is needed to make the trumpet work.

[A]air pressure

[B]daily cleaning

[C]keen eyesight

[D]longer fingers37. Which of the following can be inferred about the first trumpet players?

[A]They could not play all the notes of the scale.

[B]They were not able to pick up the trumpet.

[C]They could not play simple tunes.

[D]They had difficulty improving upon the trumpet.38. The author believes that the trumpet is particularly important because it ____.

[A]can be used in rock bands

[B]has historical significance

[C]is a religious instrument

[D]has a narrow range39. What is the best title for the passage?

[A]Science and the Trumpet
