LIGHT AND CHIAROSCURO OF TAI CHI

Tai chi is one of the most unique and representative philosophy in ancient China. Tai chi theory created a vast system of philosophy consisting of Wu Chi, Tai Chi, Yin and Yang, the Five Elements and the Eight Diagrams.

As a scientific sport, Taijiquan has become the latest sign of Tai Chi culture. Perfectly combined with Chinese dialectical theoretical thinking, martial arts, art, Daoyin (breathing exercises) and traditional Chinese medicine, Taijiquan absorbs Tai Chi, Yin Yang from traditional Confucianism and Taoism. It is thus good for people to nature one’s temperament, physical fitness and improve one’s attacking and defending skills. It is a high-level culture about human body in some sense.

Photography is a Western invention with short history and unique performance; it not only truly record history, but also express the world in an artistic way; today, it is the time that human beings enter the era of pictures reading and the digital technology changes the world, photography plays an increasingly important role in the social life and information dissemination. Though Western photography has nothing to do with Eastern Tai Chi, Mr. Li Yingjie’s works closely link and masterly blend them into one. His natural and smooth photography shows the yin and yang in Tai Chi and the magic of light and chiaroscuro.

In May, 2006, the State Council announced Tai Chi for the first batch of National Intangible Cultural Heritage; in June, 2007, the Chinese Folk Literature and Art Association named Wen County “Birthplace of Chinese Tai Chi”, and founded “Chinese Tai Chi Cultural Research Base”. As a young native of Wen County, Li Yingjie not only expresses the love of the land at work, but also fulfills the inheritance of local culture on the life. As an amateur photographer, Mr. Li Yingjie tries his best to explore the deduction and interpretation of Tai Chi spirit through artistic form of light and chiaroscuro.

Originally I think, it would be inevitably weak and pale to express Tai Chi culture with photography art, but after reading the works of Li Yingjie, I feel surprised and deeply moved. His hard work, diligence, persistence and determination, find a visual new world that express the essence of Tai Chi culture (Yin and Yang, the static and dynamic) with photographic language (black and white, virtual and real). Meanwhile, another philosophical proposition can be found, using modern light and chiaroscuro art to interpret ancient Tai Chi thinking which intangibility generally turns into tangibility, tangibility transforms into intangibility, eventually, intangibility turns into tangibility. Just like the wind and rain, saying and singing, picturing and painting……

Tai Chi Ⅱ is more like a culture book rather than photography collection. As for intangible Tai Chi, it has carried on the beneficial exploration and bold innovation with visible image.

In this image epic of Light and Chiaroscuro of Tai Chi we believe that the readers will see the Confucian doctrine of harmonious thought in Tai Chi, understand the Taoism’s pursuit of purity, enter the Buddhism’s state of emptiness and meditation, enjoy the Chinese ancient philosophy of harmony and the broad wisdom.Li Qianguang(The author is vice chairman of China Federation of Literature and Art, adviser of China Photographers' Association and chairman of Images Copyright Society of China)
