Part 1. Preparation

1.Motherly love by its very nature is unconditional.

motherly形式上像副词,但其实为形容词,表示“母亲的,慈母般的”。

词组by its nature意为“其性质”。

live up to意为“不辜负,做到;实践”。

例:Where we need to improve, or where we fail to live up to our ideals, we want the criticism.

In-Class Reading

more than多余,超出。此处表示“我没有意识到”。

balance平衡。keep与balance连用为固定用法,意为“保持平衡”。

此处是省略了分词being的独立主格结构,修饰谓语walk together。原句应为his hand(being)on my arm for balance。

be ashamed of为…感到羞耻。

例:You should be ashamed of your bad manners. 你应该对自己的不礼貌感到羞耻。

与该词组意思相近的是be guilty of,意为“对…感到内疚”。

what引导名词性从句,在句中作主语。

now that“既然,由于”,引导原因状语从句。
