It's a simple nickname, really: "The Answer."

To many, however, Allen Iverson is more enigmatic than his moniker implies. He represents a host of other conflicting things: talented, troubled, enigmatic, self-destructing, benevolent, and kind.

So who is Iverson, exactly? When looking at the landscape of current NBA players, through the patina of black tattoo ink and sometimes outlandish hairstyles, it's easy to forget that A.I. was the one who started it all. Body art is almost a prerequisite in today's game. Back in 1996, however, people didn't know what to make of the kid from Bethel High School in small-town Hampton, VA. He was a bad boy and bad news for a league that was in an awkward transition phase and wondering what to do next after the retirement of Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, who were the relatively wholesome poster boys of the previous generation.

In comes Iverson, with his cornrows, baggy shorts, and hip hop style that alienated some fans and endeared others. Looking back, the whole situation was paradoxical in nature: One the one hand, here was a player who had an outward appearance and off the court antics that were off-putting to the old- timer fans and players. On the other hand, his style of play was actually a throwback to the old-timers' era. His selflessness and disregard for his body or injury was unparalleled by his that of his contemporaries. He was more Larry Bird than Larry Johnson.

There are perhaps two stories that best encapsulate both the man and the player. The first is a dubious one that gave plenty of fodder to Iverson's critics.

On Valentine's Day, 1993, a young Allen Iverson and a couple of friends trekked to Hampton's Center Lanes to bowl a few frames. For such an infamous—and now viral—fight, the details remain murky to this day. Grainy footage, chairs flying, and distorted yelling are all that one can make out. What is known is that Iverson was involved, and that racial tension was at the center of the melee.

According to Iverson, as reported by a NPR article from April, 2010, a white man's epithets proved to be the incendiary catalyst. According to the man and his friends, Iverson confronted him unprovoked.

In the end, Iverson was sentenced to 15 years in prison, of which he served four months after his conviction was overturned by a higher court. The incident made national headlines, as Iverson was widely regarded as one of the best—if not the best—basketball players in the country. Pre-brawl, he was arguably the pride of Hampton.

Afterwards? He was a divisive lightning rod, a role that he would embrace the rest of his career. It was bad enough that a rising high school basketball star was involved in a public brawl, but even worse that it was racially tinged in an already racially divided town.

Fast forward to March 12, 1997. It's the last quarter of the season, Iverson's rookie year. The reigning world champions, the Chicago Bulls, are in town, and Michael Jordan is guarding Iverson at the top of the key. For all of the hype surrounding Iverson and the cemented legend status of Jordan, this was a "game within a game" and a past-meets the-future moment.

If A.I.'s lethal crossover dribble wasn't well known at the time, it was about to be. With just ten seconds on the shot clock, Jordan isolated Iverson. What would the talented rookie do? Drive into the lane, then dish out to a waiting perimeter shooter in the wings? Or a fake out, only to pull up a contested shot? Remember, Jordan—for all of his offensive prowess—was no slouch on the defensive end, either.

Iverson crossed over once on His Airness, creating a bit of space. If the play ends there, it's already a moment for the highlight reel, regardless of how the 76'ers possession ends. But Iverson wasn't done yet, as that first crossover dribble was just a teaser. He crossed over again, making Jordan look downright foolish, left standing about four feet out of position. He helplessly watched as the diminutive rookie point guard pulled up to make the jump shot as time expired on the shot clock.

The announcers were thrilled, if not exuberant, and a few hoop geeks noted the play as a subtle ushering in of the proverbial "new guard" (no pun intended). The play may be legendary, but it's worth noting that there was relatively little fanfare at the time. This was pre-YouTube and a different era that preceded the 24-hour news cycle.

Love him or hate him, Allen Iverson—the Answer—had arrived. He was not going to be just a flash in the pan, a spark on the horizon of the Roy Tarpley variety that would fall prey to his own demons. That late-winter evening was the exclamation point on an impressive rookie season, a moment that let the world know that A.I.'s ability to polarize basketball fans was matched only by his otherworldly talent.

The remainder of his career would follow a similar arc: an MVP award (2001), several scoring titles, and a NBA Finals appearance peppered by run-ins with coaches, a failed rap career, a marijuana arrest, and, most recently, financial ruin (after earning $154 million over the course of his playing days). For every on-court feat, there seemed to be two eyebrow-raising incidents that placed you on either the "love" or "hate" side.

All of which brings us back to The Question: will history be kind to the Answer? In terms of measurables, the most definitive metric would be entrance into the Hall of Fame. The sports world is littered with players whose eligibility was questionable because of a sour public image (see: Lawrence Taylor, former NFL linebacker).

This isn't a fair stance, but sports writers—i.e. the voters—are only human and sometimes let personal opinions get in the way. Simply put: Iverson should be accepted into the Hall of Fame when he files for retirement from the NBA and the requisite time has passed to be eligible for enshrinement.

To paint the picture in more broad strokes, it needs to be said: he should be remembered as one of the best to play the game. Not necessarily the all time best, but what he did on the court speaks for itself.

"I play every game as if it were my last" is one of his most oft-repeated quotes, and it wasn't just idle, idiomatic post game drivel. He played with an uncanny sense of urgency, even during the garbage time games in mid January when the interest of both the fans and players tends to wane. For him, there was no such thing as a meaningless game. Every time he suited up, he felt it deserved the same effort as the NBA Finals. If he had a basketball in his hands, and someone was trying to prevent him from scoring, it was go time, regardless of his team's record, the time of year, or the venue.“我把每一场比赛都当作最后一场比赛来打”是他最常重复的名言之一,这不是句空话,或是比赛结束后随便说说的废话。

Who Iverson is as a person is one thing (and a much debated one), but his record on the court is indisputable. Many comparably talented athletes from his generation cannot say the same about their effort (hello, Randy Moss and Kobe Bryant).

The Answer to this Question is simple: Allen Iverson is one of the greatest basketball players to ever play the game.

Background and Upbringing: A Stacked Deck成长背景:一次洗牌

The story of where Allen Ezail Iverson came from is all-too-familiar.

An athletically gifted child growing up in an impoverished environment, his gifts on the field of competition looked to be his only way out of what the statistics from his era indicated would be an inevitable life of crime. According to a 1996 article from City Journal, author John DiJulio, Jr. predicted that black crime would continue to rise, citing a projected deviance rate with the overall increase in the amount of youths under 17 years old.

Iverson was born on June 7, 1975 in Hampton, VA, located a few miles southeast of the CIA headquarters in Langley. It's a large town of 141,000 residents, that sees itself as a quaint place rife with Norman Rockwell charm, if one is to take stock in the city government's self description. On its city website, the police department boasts that it makes Hampton "the most liveable city in Virginia."

Iverson's ESPN.com bio states that his mother, Ann, was unmarried and 15 when she gave birth. The father, Allen Broughton, was not in the picture. He grew up in a housing project that had a faulty sewage system, and excrement would flood the floors that he crawled on. Humble beginnings is one thing, but this was beyond humility.

And the atrocities didn't end there. According to the ESPN film documentary 30 for 30, Iverson lived in a cramped apartment with 14 other children. Ann was an illicit drug abuser.

Psychology Today's Jeremy Clyman, M.A., postulated a few theories as to how this shaped Iverson, how his horrendous childhood factored in to his future psyche. In A.I.'s world, emotions are optional, and it's important to keep your distance from others (even those close to you), because it's inevitable that they will eventually hurt you. It may be just a theory, but a viable one.《今日心理学》的杰里米·克莱曼是文科硕士,他提出了几个假设,包括艾弗森性格的成因,他可怕的童年对他未来心智的影响。

He soon discovered his talent for basketball, and would parlay his gifts on the court into grub on the table, according to the ESPN scribe, Mike Sielski. Iverson was also gifted on the gridiron, leading his team to a Virginia state championship his junior year.

Then the Valentine's Day Brawl came. While Iverson was in jail, the seeds were planted for his eventual attendance to Georgetown University. The bowling alley incident made headlines for the usual reasons: violence striking in an otherwise relatively peaceful town, enhanced racial tension, and the like. However, Iverson's basketball prowess and nascent celebrity status gave a noteworthy story even more steam as the litigation played out on television screens throughout the Beltway.

Legendary Hoyas coach John Thompson took notice of the unfortunate turn of events, and reached out to the family. He visited with Ann, and felt a distinctive connection to her and her troubled son.

"She was the reason why I helped her child," Thomson told Sielski. He cemented the deal when he visited Iverson after his release.“因为她我才帮那孩子的,”汤普森这样告诉斯艾尔斯基。

At Georgetown, Iverson immediately took charge during the
