Can You Help Save the Earth?

How much trash does one person produce in a week? How about in a year? Brennan Bird, 23, decided to find out. In 2010, as a student at the University of California, Davis, he saved all of his non-biodegradablegarbage for an entire year—in his room.

Watching more than 200 pounds of bottles, cans, and other trash pile up led him to make some big lifestyle changes. "It really made me face the impact of my daily decisions," Brennan says.

He now carries a reusable cup everywhere for drinks and cloth bags for buying fruits and vegetables. He buys foods like cereal and rice in bulkat a food co-op, filling his own containers.

"If we change the way we live, it can have a profound effect on the world," Brennan says.

Brennan also experiments with other ways to reuse trash—such as building a bench using "bricks" made of discardedplastic bottles.

"I'll never look at trash the same way again," Brennan says.

Green Machines

There are almost half a million school buses on U.S. roads. Can the air pollution they emit be cut?

Jonny Cohen is working on it. A sophomore from Highland Park High School in Highland Park, Illinois, he is the inventor of Green-Shields. One of these thin, clear plexiglassshields, placed over the front of a bus, makes the vehicle more aerodynamic, Jonny says. This means the bus will burn less fuel and emit fewer gas fumes into the air—up to 20 percent less, Jonny found in a recent test.

So far, Jonny, 15, has received, in total, $26,000 in grants from Youth Ventureand the Pepsi Refresh Projectto help him develop his idea. He was a finalist for the 2011 Prudential Spirit of Community Awardas well.

With the help of a team of volunteers, Jonny hopes to finish the prototype of his shield this summer. He is working with the Illinois Department of Transportation to get GreenShields approved for use on school buses.

To other young people with ideas he says, "You really have to stand up and be the change. You can't wait for it to happen."

A City Garden

In 2007, gardens were hard to come by on the East Side of San Antonio, Texas. So were places to get fresh, organic fruits and vegetables.

Diana Lopez and other community members decided to change that. They started by converting an abandoned lot filled with trash into a vibrantorganic garden full of produce.

"It took a lot of research on my part," says Diana, 22, who is employed by the Southwest Workers Union, an organization of low-income workers and families in San Antonio.

She had to learn how to tillsoil and choose the plants and foods that would grow best in the garden.“我为此做了很多研究工作。”

Today the project has expanded to cover four lots, growing a host of fruits and vegetables. It also teaches young people about gardening and nature. "It's important to get your clothes and your hands dirty," Diana says. "It's all for good, to revitalize our Mother Earth."

Reducing E-Waste

One day, Sachin Rudraraju, 16, noticed two old computers left out beside a trash can in his Powell, Ohio, neighborhood.

"That's where I saw the problem," says the junior at Olentangy Liberty High School—the problem of how to dispose ofold electronics.

Americans got rid of about 2.3 million tons of computers and other electronics in 2007, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Only 18 percent of it was recycled. Most of the rest went to landfills, where toxinssuch as mercuryand lead can leak out into the water and air.

In 2008, Sachin founded the Community Recycling Campaign. He and other volunteers have gone door-to-door educating people about recycling electronics. The group has also collected hundreds of computers and computer products—refurbishingwhat they can and properly recycling the rest.

"I think the campaign inspired people," says Sachin, who was also a Prudential Spirit of Community Award finalist. "People understand that it's an important cause."

Lobbyingfor Change

In Alaska's Kenai Peninsula, where Freya Chay lives, renewable energy like wind and solar power is an important topic.

"In Alaska, we have a really big oil and natural gas industry," says the 16-year-old sophomore at Kenai Central High School. But oil and gas pollute the air and water, and there is a limited amount of both, Freya notes. "For me, alternative energy is a way we can get energy without hurting the environment."

Starting with her hometown and working her way to the state capital of Juneau, Freya lobbied officials to pass a state law that encourages the use of alternative energy systems in homes. The law exemptssome homeowners who install such systems from higher property taxes. This accomplishment won her a 2010 Brower Youth Award for environmental activism.

But Freya is still at work, convincing municipalitiesto enact the law. "It's still a process," she says. "But I feel like [the outcome] is pretty promising."

Teenage Inventors That Changed the World改变世界的少年发明家◎ By Robert Evans & Mohammed Shariff 译 / 辛献云

Superman Was Invented by High School Kids

Every elementary school kid has doodleda superhero on the back of a notebook at some point. But we're guessing your sloppydepiction of "Butt Man" didn't make you a millionaire and change pop culture forever. That is, however, what happened when a young Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel first conceivedthe Man of Steel in high school.

Their design would wind upbeing the templatefor pretty much every superhero that would come later. As teenagers, Siegel and Shuster self-published their crude comic in a fanzine. The first fictional superman was a creepy, sort-of evil mentalist who probably menacedrenamed replicas of local bullies. After the Nazis went and soured the world on the whole concept of a "superman", Siegel and Shuster reinvented him as the captain of truth and justice.

Finding it difficult to track down anyone who had a serious interest in the character and style, it took an almost unbelievable three more years for the granddaddy of all superheroes to find an independent publisher.

By the way, there is an almost Batman-esque element to Jerry Siegel's story. Siegel was a hugely unpopular proto-nerd, and his only solacecame from seeking the elusive approval of his successful father. His father was mysteriously murdered while Jerry was still a kid, thus motivating him to dedicate his life to fighting crime. Since he didn't have billions of dollars or serious mental problems, he used comics instead of batarangs.

A 15-Year-Old Invented Braille

At the age of 3, little Louis Braille cut his eye screwing around with daddy's tools and ended up blind from a horrible infection. Since this was the 1800s, his options for treatment included "sucking it up" and "dying of syphilislike everyone else". Fortunately, Louis was born in France, host to the only school for blind kids on earth. He earned a scholarship at age 10, but there was only so much he could learn by listening to lectures. If little Louis wanted to read Charles Dickens books one day, he'd have to invent his own system of writing.

No biggie.

Louis was inspired by a French army captain, one Charles Barbier de la Serre. He'd developed an eyes-free system of writing for French soldiers to use during times of utmost sneakiness. His system, Sonography, didn't work very well, but it inspired preteen Louis to dedicate three years toward making it look like a bitch. By age 15 he'd invented modern Braille—an entire alphabetthat you can read by running your finger across it.

The Inventors of Hip-Hop Were Age 17 and 12

Obviously no one person sat down and just invented hip-hop out of the blue. It evolved over time and has many fathers. But two of the most prominentfathers were a couple of kids.

It was the early 1970s. A 17-year-old named Clive Campbell had just emigrated from Jamaica, and boy did he love music and partying. He became known as DJ Kool Herc and proceeded to put on some of the first block parties.

Herc noticed how anxious the people at the parties got waiting for the beat to start so that they could start dancing. So he decided to play with their impatient asses by playing the beat from a song, and then fading in a beat from another song, and then fading to another beat, creating an on-the-fly mix of nothing but beats. He also had a unique vocal style of calling out in his microphone to the attendees in rhymes such as "B-boys, B-girls, are you ready? Keep on rock steady," and "This is the joint! Herc beat on the point," inadvertentlylaying the basis for what would become rap.

Soon, the DJ had his own pupils known as the first MCs, who spread hip-hop throughout the Northeast. One of these pupils, Grand Wizard Theodore, claims that once when he was in his basement messing around with his turntable, his mom came down and started yelling at him. Trying to stop the record by pushing it down, Theodore accidentally abruptly slowed the disc and so heard the first scratch.

Promptly ignoring his mother, he did it over and over, trying to perfect the sound. And that was that—record scratching became a thing, and later would appear on the first really successful hip-hop track ever, Herbie Hancock's "Rockit". Oh, and if Grand Wizard Theodore sounds like a ridiculous name for a cutting-edge musician, he has an excuse: He was 12 years old at the time.

A 17-Year-Old Designed the 50-Star American Flag

Most Americans have grown up hearing that the first American flag was designed and sewn by America's Grandma, Betsy Ross. But now, even that much is being debated, and as the nation's most bored historians argue over who sewed the first flag, they're ignoring who made the most recent one.

After all, it's not like we're still using that design anyway. Each little hunk of land America seized or bought eventually got declared a state, and each time, the flag had to change, because frankly, at that point putting stars on a flag was the only way to keep track of all the new states.

In 1959, the United States added Alaska and Hawaii as its newest states, and when that happened Congress turned designing the next flag into a nationwide cut-throatcontest. Fifty stars had to be crammed onto that flag somehow, in a manner that didn't look completely stupid.

In Lancaster, Ohio, 17-year-old Robert Heft had put hours of effort into a new U.S. flag for his history project, only to receive a B-. To most of us, that's pretty decent. But Heft had just worked his ass off toiling on his mother's sewing machine, and thought he deserved more. He approached his teacher, who dared him to submit it to Congress, and said if it were selected as the new flag he would get his A.

Heft was going up against 1500 other designs by accomplished artists all over the country. And like the end of a lifetime movie, he actually won. President Eisenhower liked Heft's flag better than all the rest.

The experience led Heft to successes such as becoming the mayor of Napoleon, Ohio, and traveling around the world for decades as a motivational speaker.

Queen Elizabeth Ⅱ:the Woman Behing the Role伊丽莎白二世:英国女王的多面人生◎ By Jennie Bond译 / 韩丽芳

This year Queen Elizabeth II celebrates her Diamond Jubilee. The following reveals the woman behind the pomp and circumstance.

Daughter

There was always something rather charming about the way the Queen addressed her elderly mother. "Look, Mummy!" I remember her once saying as she and the Queen Mother walked towards me at a Buckingham Palace reception. I was standing with ITV'sroyal reporter at the time, Nick Owen. "Mummy!" the Queen repeated. "You know those two. They're always on television. Let's go and have a chat." There's no doubt that Elizabeth adored her mother—and indeed her father, whose sudden death saw her accedeto the throne, aged just 25. And they adored her, too. As a child, she'd enjoyed a happy family life with her parents, then the Duke and Duchess of York, and her sister, Margaret. There was no thought at that time, of Elizabeth becoming Queen. Her Uncle Edward was in line for the throne and no-one foresaw his abdication. Her destiny changed when she was just ten years old and she watched her parents take on roles they had never wanted, as King and Queen. As she grew up, she learned from them and even in her 70s, the Queen would call "Mummy" every day for a chat and, perhaps, a word of advice.

Sister

Elizabeth and Margaret were very different characters: Elizabeth was rather serious and almost crazily tidy; Margaret was extrovertand headstrong. But they remained close as sisters through thick and thin. As children, they depended on one another a great deal—thrown together in a royal world where school was not an option. Instead, they had lessons at home with their governess Marion Crawford. Even though Margaret was often naughty, Elizabeth was always protective.

In adulthood, the Queen helped to guide her sister through the emotional minefieldof a romance with a divorced man, Peter Townsend. Later, she had to stand by and see Margaret's marriage to Anthony Armstrong-Jones disintegrateinto divorce. Margaret was one of the few people who would dare lose their temper with the Queen. Even as an adult, she'd occasionally shout at her. Once she's said to have thrown a dishcloth in her face during a picnic. But they never quarrel for long and it remains a sadness to the Queen that her sister never found lasting personal happiness.

Wife

Almost 65 years of married life! It's a long time. But there's still a spark of romance about the Queen and Prince Philip that's charming to witness. Watch them at many a public event and you'll see a special glance, a quick smile: an acknowledgement that they've shared a whole lifetime together and understand one another almost without the need to talk. It's tough for any man to play second fiddle tohis wife. And Philip is a proud man. But he has always said that his first and foremostduty is to support the Queen. To that end, he gave up the naval career he loved. It was a big sacrifice.

As one of her cousins once told me, the Queen uses her feminine tricks to placatePhilip. At home, she lets him wear the trousersin every sense: running the estates, making the big decisions and sometimes bossing her about. He is, after all, the only one who'd dare. They're not the sort of couple to show their emotions but, on their golden wedding anniversary, the Queen put her feelings on record. "Prince Philip," she said, "is someone who doesn't take easily to compliments but he has, quite simply, been my strength and stay all these years. And I owe him a debt greater than he would ever claim, or we shall ever know."
